Easy. 6. Anyone who says otherwise is lying.
Or has a different opinion, the nerve of them.
I love it when people take comments like mine seriously.
:D well come on it is hard to tell sometimes, besides I've just started 6 for the first time, by the end I may agree with you.
I envy you. The first time I played 6 was a memorable occasion.

I would be lying to myself if I didn't say that I enjoyed FF7 the most. FF6, FF8, and FF9 were all enjoyable for me as well. Didn't get to fussed about 10.

Has to be 6, followed closely by 10.
God I hate the aggravating mini-games in 10 to get the ultimate weapons for everyone. ESPECIALLY the Chocobo Race. Oh wait, how could I forget the nigh-impossible Lightning Dodge mini-game? Easily, thank you Square for some of the most ridiculous hoops to jump through in that game.

Heh...it's funny how everybody has by now accepted the fact that this is an eternally recurring thread against which no amount of "searchbar nazism" will suffice.

But seriously people, just ask yourself...how many times have you answered the question by now?

Oh......oh.....raking up post counts aren't we? Move along, citizen ;).
Nicely ironic.

(Currently secretly celebrating a huge +1 post count with drool raining down my chin and an uncontrollable erection) <----- Sarcasm

No, but really, thanks for your input. Anything to say on topic?

I'll give you your point about this being a recurring thread but does it really bother you that much?

I see you posted in a zombie related thread today, I believe it was a thread about how oversaturated the whole concept of zombies is.
Those things are pretty original huh? In my opinion; this is irony on an 'inception'-like level.
Lighten up dude :)...why so serious? Did I hurt your feelings with my post or something? The posts thing was just a joke.

What bothers me about threads like these is that they have little capacity for starting any meaningful discussion. Very often it is just number spamming (VI, VII, IX, X etc) with a short explanation (a couple of sentences/ a paragraph): nothing interesting/ inspiring.

On topic: for nostalgia reasons I like IX best, but to be honest the older I get and the more entertainment (in various media) I consume, the more I understand just how bad ALL FFs are (story/ narrative/ plot/ characterization wise), even the ones I consider good in comparison. As a teenager immersion/ acceptance comes easier. Play the game again 5-10 years later and you are likely to notice more (and accept less).

I can tell you at age 13-14 FF VIII seemed a big deal. I played it with zeal and thought it was a serious game. At age 21 I laughed my ass off at just how ridiculous a large portion of the game was. Same game, I just got older and had more experiencs under my belt to compare it with.

The more FFs I have played, the less of an impact they had. "Surprise" reveals of a different antagonist who was actually controlling the initial antagonist. I've seen it before and have come to expect it.

A ragtag bunch of misfits who in the end, through the power of love and friendship, overcome their differences, endure hardships and obtain an unambiguous victory over the powers of evil (often evil for evil's sake) and thus save the day, the world and maybe even the universe. An epic quest in which you run around the world and at the end of which you always win. It features The Hero, The Love Interest, The Best Friend, The Cooky One, The Comic Relief, The Veteran, The Eccentric...you get the picture. In the end, FF games have come to slavishly follow their own recipe.

What about loss of friendship (through other means than death)? Pyrrhic victories? Ambiguous evil? Characters that transcend their roles? What about guilt, shame, remorse, doubt, jealousy, contempt? In other words, mature themes....with all the accompanying depth.

In my view, FF is a predominantly teenage product, created with teenagers in mind and mostly enjoyed by teenagers. Do not read any negative judgment into this statement, it would be your own projection.

Now, wouldn't you call this a real discussion as opposed to "I like FF X best because Yuna is cute and Sin is scary and oh my gosh the story is so kewl..".
Very well done, mate.

I can forgive you for not feeling the need to discuss those views off the bat considering every post so far has been, as you described, a number and a quick explanation with very little discussion going on.

I'll be upfront, that is almost all because of nostalgia, it was my first of the series and I got it when I was like 8

...I'd never played a game that felt so, well, like a final fantasy game.
It is all about nostalgia for me, and I still look at the cutscenes from that game and think "wow, these were amazing for its time".

But I'll concede that much of the rest of these games (plot, etc), including the newest titles, don't stand up to great scrutiny.

They are still admirable for the entertainment that they provide for players young and old alike, though I don't know how much longer the franchise will last.

I'm in my '20s now and I do know a few older cats who do still enjoy the franchise, including the latest games in the series, for what it is.

Final Fantasy IX - X-2 - X - XII .

These are the ones I have finished except IX but its the best one I have played and the best thing is that I can play it by using PSP :I . I also have VII and VIII but haven't played them enough to rate them :) And there is one I hate the most: XIII...

VIII, followed by VII, followed by X.

I don't care what anyone says about my choice of taste :p

-FF Tactics (PSX or PSP version. NOT Tactics: Advance)
-FF6 (still has the best brevity and combat flow. Had the best character roster gameplay-wise, and still one of the best for personality)

I enjoy Tactics Advance a lot more than I should, but if I have to go with a numbered entry IV would win hands down.

X, by a long shot.

Remains one of my favorite RPGs to this very day. And Auron is still a badass.

But X-2 needs to die in a fire. I have burning, seething hatred for that crap.

Also, I REALLY like Kingdom Hearts, but I'm pretty sure that doesn't count on this topic.

Incidentally, my favorite scene with Auron is actually IN Kingdom Hearts:

I have a hard time nailing down what is my for sure "favorite" so instead I have my Top 5. The order rearranges sometimes but this is where they stand as of right now.

Those games are FFVI, FFVIII, FFXIII, FFIV, and FFII, with FFX just barely being edged out of the Top 5.

Meanwhile out of all the Final Fantasy games I don't like FFVII and FFIII. They are still good games(I have yet to find a Final Fantasy game I haven't enjoyed at least a bit), but out of the Final Fantasy games they are my least favorite.

Definitely X, bar none. But it should be noted that I have only played X, X-2 and XIII. It shouldn't be seen as a sign that I only pick that one because the others are basically crap (which they are). I genuinely love the game - as much as I love seeing Spoony pick on it.
Implying ff6 and 7 are crap, lulz
No no, just that X-2 and XIII are - at least in comparison. Still had some fun playing them though... and I'm pretty sure I would have loved some of the other games in the series if I'd jumped on the bandwagon a bit sooner.
You still can enjoy them. Just because a game is old doesn't mean it's completely unavailable.

Id say in this order.

Final Fantasy 3
Final Fantasy Tactics
Final Fantasy 8
Final Fantasy 7
Final Fantasy 12 (Im so sick of people saying it sucks, its about the politics and the world, not the characters, get over it)

This is always a point of debate, but for me it works like this:

VI - My number one, hands down. It has by an order of several magnitudes, the absolute best characters and story.

XII - This one always hits people by surprise. While the main character was lackluster, the story overall was very very good. The battle system was probably the best battle system in a FF game (I know this was hijacked from FFXI, but it was a wondrous thing in a single player game). And it offered open world exploration and side quests on a scale not seen in FF. The license board was fantastic, but it was made even better by the International Edition of the game when it broke the license board apart into separate jobs. I admittedly had to download this and someone made an english patch for it that converted everything, it was pretty amazing and took years on the part of some very talented programmers.

VII - I felt this was a good followup to VI. The story was well executed though the downtime in the game almost put me to sleep at points. And the pre rendered backround stuff... it honestly was the worst part of the era. Though it looks fantastic on a PSP.

For me, it would be a tie between FFIX and FFX. X was one of the very first games I got for PS2 and my brother and I played the hell out of it. Auron made that game fucking awesome, and the summons were really cool to see. I got stuck on IX for a bit on the first disk, because I played it when I was young and stupid, but once I came back to it later on, I really enjoyed it. VII is right after both of those, but the characters and story didn't seem as interesting or engaging as IX or X. Same goes for VIII, but the discs I played on were too scratched up and I couldn't play the last 1/3 of the game. I tried out Tactics and IV, but they were both really unengaging for me and didn't play them much at all.

By the way, for anyone that wants to play FFX or replay it, when you get a friend sphere (think that's what they're called) that moves one person to another's spot on the sphere grid, move Yuna to Auron's area and grab all of the power/health spheres. The summons get some multiple of those stats and become OVERPOWERED. By the end of the game, every single one of my normal attacks and overdrives did the damage cap and 3 shot the final boss.

It's the one game I actually cared about.

Which, incidentally, is none of them.

That's funny. I'm in my 20s too and FF VIII was also my first. During my first playthrough I can say I wasn't bothered by the "Draw" mechanic, because I was so damn excited. Only years later did I ask myself...how in the hell did I manage to put up with this tedious crap?

I agree that FF games can still be enjoyable on several levels. It's just that personally I simply can't judge them on their own merit. I immediately start comparing them with books I've read, movies I've seen, other games I've played. Automatically, they come out of that comparison as mediocre, lackluster even.

Yeah, that is indeed the big question. How much longer will the franchise last? I wonder how much is riding on the succes of Versus XIII.

Totally aside, have you by any chance heard of (or even played) a game called "Vagrant Story"?
