Halo: Combat Evolved, no question. It's visually beautiful, its simple story is paced and told perfectly, and the gameplay is simply phenomenal.
I lol'd.

OT: For me it would have to be CoD:4. The characters were actually well written, unlike in MW:2 where everyone just goes batshit crazy halfway through. The graphics were pretty decent and the gameplay was better than most FPSs (AKA the guns were balanced).

bioshock and halflife series would have to be it for me.

bioshock cause its awesome and fun and a nice twist at the end.

and halflife because it was fun, except for the scary parts that i had to play in like 2 min portions cause im a pansy and the whole you can raise up a ramp by putting floating barrels unter id.

might go play half life again.

Bioshock, thought to be fair I've never played half life 1 or 2. I really need to get around to that

1. F.E.A.R. - damn interesting story (i looked everywhere to find every record, piece of paper, laptop and whatnot and made a screeny of it to write down the entire story so i could read it again, later), and damn, did i shit my pants ^^
2. Portal - just wow ^^ ...GlaDOS, i love you ^^
3. Deus Ex (third place only because it's not really a fps. that does not do it justice.) - well, it's Deus Ex, what more is there needed to say?

but why, oh why, fps only??
Max Payne, man, Max Payne!!

Fps games have storys!?!?

I honestly cant think of any that truly stick out in my mind.

One of the biggest problems i have is poking holes in storys, and thats really why i cant say most Fps games have a "good" story.

Half-life 2.
I've never really got into Halo because the environments in the early ones are very identical and there's no real stark changes.
The Half-life's campaigns had huge changes, from the interiors of the labs, to Xen, to coastline, city apartments, the citadel, sewers, sandtraps... there was so much change and as a level designer I love picking through the lighting, shapes and general constructs of environment that made up the entire thing.
Halo just has a lot of identical corridors copy-pasted together, with the occasional change to top of world grassland and tundra. There were also the interior spaces, but navigation through lighting and intuitive mechanisms are scarce. Not to mention the huge cliché's used in the script.

Half Life 2 had a great campaign. Bioshock was good. If I can say Unreal Tournament's Tournament was a campaign then that was a lot of fun.

Of the games I've played, i would have to say it was Halo: combat evolved. Loved that game, replayed that campaign more than any game that wasn't an rpg.

It's a toss up between Halo CE and Bioshock. But I'd probably have to go with Halo, since I played it to death.
