This is going to be kinda long, sorry. Spider-Man 3 on the Wii. Keep in mind this was early on in the Wii's life-cycle, this was my first ever run-in with a dumbed down Wii port. I knew the game was going to be a different build on Wii, but I figured it would be just as good as the 360/PS3 version. Anyways, I was uber stoked for Spider-Man 3. I was actually more excited for the game then I was the movie. I certainly loved the Spider-Man 2 movie, but I put hours and hours into the game.
The game seemed to have a lot going for it at the time. I was mainly looking forward to web swinging with the Wii controller, but the game itself seemed to be shaping up nicely. It sounded like it would have everything from the other version, plus a couple extra villains and the ability to change costumes at any time. I thought the only major differences would be that the city would be a bit smaller, and that the story would progress in a slightly different fashion. I couldn't possibly be any more excited.
So when the day finally came that the game and movie was released, I sat through school giddy as hell. When the final bell rang, I went directly to Gamestop on the way home and picked up my pre-ordered copy of the game. At first, I was actually pretty satisfied with the game. It wasn't what I had imagined, but it pleased my inner fanboy...until the next day I went to my brothers apartment and played the 360 version. I took one look at it and my jaw dropped. Wii owners got completely gipped, and though I didn't know it at the time, this sadly became the norm for Wii ports.
The main problem with the game is that it simply doesn't live up to its promises. They made it sound like it would have all the same features as the other version, which was a downright lie. But maybe this is the wrong way of looking at it, maybe I should judge it for what it is instead of what it isn't. So how is it by itself? Still not very good, but it does do some things right. Web swinging is a blast, the ability to change suits and the differences between them are nifty. Combat can also be somewhat fun, even if the control scheme is flawed. I also like that gangs have their own territories that you can help clean up and claim for the police.
Unfortunately, the game is downright ugly. You can tell the game needed several more months of development before it should have been released. Animations are either stiff or simply nonexistent in some cases, and the buildings are textureless when viewed from more then a few blocks away. Even then, they just look like gray blocks with simple-looking windows on them. And some of these 'crimes' are just stupid. Doing tricks for tourists? Delivering fruit pies? What the hell!? And the gameplay just gets dull after an hour or so as there's not much to do in the city. You can fight crime, do trick races that aren't near as fun as they should be, or collect meaningless items that unlock no award except for a small experience boost. (And I mean small. There's not much point in collecting them)
All in all, I wouldn't rate the game any higher then a 6. It has some really good ideas, but the developers simply weren't given enough time to do what they really wanted. So I don't blame Vicarious Visions, I blame Activision for making them release it with the movie. I understand a lot of people don't like the 360/PS3 version either, though personally I don't think it's at all bad. Not as good as Spider-Man 2 was, but I still have fun with it. And it's certainly better then the Wii version.
