The Kingdom Hearts series.

Add to this more awesome music for each world, with a battle version as soon as enemies come into range, and you've got a game where you'll never forget the music, as each song is intertwined with the specific memories of playing those areas or watching moving/compelling cut-scenes.

The Elder Scrolls I like a LOT.

I'm also a pretty big fan of Paul Anthony Romero's work on the Heroes of Might and Magic series.
So many memories when I hear this music. Glad I still got the game ^^

I think a large amount of the Nintendo games did a very good job early on to come up with catchy tunes, which makes them contenders, easily. Stuff from Zelda and Mario are almost unmistakable to someone that isn't even interested in video games.

WIth that said, I think Halo has some of the best soundtracks overall. The main theme song was really catchy, and I thought the mood that was set with the music in ODST was exceptionally well done. It was just a really different take on a videogame soundtrack and I enjoyed it.

Wow first post ninja'd my top two picks? Impressive. My runner-up vote goes towards Pokemon, particularly the battle themes. My favorite'd prolly be Cyrus's battle theme:

Makes me think that the shit just got real everytime, even if he is a complete pushover.

Original music? Gotta be Monkey Island.

If I'm allowed to cheat and use non-original music though, it's obviously Guitar Hero: Metallica and Rock Band: AC/DC, with an honourable mentions for Brutal Legend.

VVVVVV has the greatest chiptune soundtrack I have ever heard. It is astounding.

If we're going to talk classical music, though, then I've got to go with Lost Odyssey. Its probably the only game where I can recognize almost the entire soundtrack and Uematsu's best work.

The halo games easily, out of the 40 songs I have on itunes, like half of them are from halo games.

Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge. It reminds me so much of the 60s band, Jethro Tull. Absolutely astounding.

Or The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past. Man, I could "tum, tum" that soundtrack all day.

I'm going to pick the Sonic series. Even when the games weren't particularly great, they still had brilliant music.

Some examples:

Trust me I could post a lot more in there if I really felt like it. I think that Dreamcast era was my favourite for Sonic music.

Again I probably could've added more, but I wanted to keep the amount of songs down.

However LoZ and MGS also have very good music overall as well and probably contain my two favourite pieces of gaming music with these two pieces.

I have no idea if this is actually in the game, but love it:

Music that sparks more music I'm a big fan of, so FF VII's Voices of the Lifestream that can be found here, http://ocremix.org/album/1/final-fantasy-vii-voices-of-the-lifestream amazes me.

and
to sample (check the playlist on youtube if you want more).

Another example of music motivating music can be said about Zelda:

So, yea, my votes would likely be put towards the Final Fantasy and Zelda Franchises.

Edit: Missed one

Ahahahahahahahahahaha!

Glad someone mentioned this, Heroes II has the most nostalgia inducing soundtrack for me though

Spyro the Dragon (PsX trilogy) has some of the best music I've ever heard, especially in the Dream Weavers world.
