Yes, we've seen threads talking about all these horrible, ungrateful, stupid fanbases, but I have yet to see one that talks about the really good fanbases. So, Escapists, I ask you: which game or game series do you think has the best fanbase? What makes them the best to you? Are they polite? Creative? Funny? Intelligent? Please do tell.

For me, it would have to be (big shock) Doom's fanbase. The fans, rather than complain about the game's flaws or how it doesn't get many new installments, constantly add more to it. Recently, I've been playing Risen 3D. It's a Doom engine source port that gives the game high resolution textures and full 3D enemies, weapons, items and decorations. As you can tell by my avatar, you can't really beat the original sprites, but that doesn't change the fact that someone took the time to put a different view on a game they love. Risen 3D isn't the only example of this either as far as Doom goes. We've got Jdoom, Zdoom, and all these other source ports with no purpose other than to add new and interesting features to Doom. Not only that, but the mapmaking community still thrives to this day. Are all of these maps good? Of course not, but that doesn't change the devotion these fans (including me) have to this game.

Now, in case you forgot across my large, somewhat ranty paragraph, I ask you again: Which game or game series do you think has the best fanbase?

I found out Duke Nukem fans are some of the meanest people ever, but after GearBox's failure, I think there will be less and less Duke Fans.

I would say Mario though. There is a little bit of Mario in everyone :)

No Game has a good fanbase, fanboys are all dicks.

There are plenty of games with modding communities just as large and active as the ones you mention.

Minecraft

maybe a bit unfair because the game makes it so easy to make amazing things with it (because that's kind of the whole point), but they deserve some kudos nonetheless. And while I don't spend much time on the MC forums, they do seem friendlier, more fun, less whiny and all around helpful than, say, Escapees (sorry) or SPUFers.

It's why I don't post there, I can't be any of those things :p

The Lord of the Rings Online

Haven't met a single dick in these few months that I have been playing. The community is very friendly and helpful.

Morrowind has a pretty solid fanbase. The game has been out for years now, and by rights, should have sunk away to nothing, played only by people who want a nostalgia kick.

But people are STILL improving it, adding to it, and fixing it with mods. That's dedication.

*Disclaimer* I love Morrowind, with or without mods! When I say it should have sunk away, I refer to it's age, nothing more.

This. I'm amazed they didn't get the usual batch of pricks that most MMOs get rocking up.

In contrast to the sporadic and irritible FF7 fanbase and the cold elitist FF8 fanbase, the FF9 fanbase is made of some really chill people. Maybe im just saying it because im a huge FF9 fanboy..

OH SO U LIKE OBLIVION HURR DURR ENJOY UR DUMBED DOWN SHIT GAME WHILE I PLAY MORROWIND WHICH IS VASTLY SUPERIOR I WILL MENTION THIS EVERY 2 SECONDS FROM NOW ON! <------ thats my experience with Morrowind fans. Maybe im just unlucky, im sure they arent all like that.

OT: No idea actually, it seems to me as soon as someone becomes to much a fan of anything they get annoying.
I thought it was refering to best fanbase in terms of loyalty and support of the game. But if the OT was about best fanbase in terms of politeness and respect, then yeah, it sure ain't Morrowind. But I don't think there is one. All good things will have at least one bad fan that brings it down.

This. Especially before it went F2P, but even now the fanbase is considerably better than any other I've seen.

As a FF fan in general I find all FF fans that are fans of a game are quite irritable and love to point out that their favourite FF is greater than 7. Yes we get it not everyone likes 7 even though it was quite popular it is time to move on.

OT: No game has a good or better fanbase than any others.

I think I have t go with The Sims. I've never met a Sims fan that's completely socially awkward enough to not have a conversation about their second lives ('scuse the pun). Not only do they love the game, but won't defend it's stupid flaws, and are more than willing to shill out forty bucks or so every few months for an expansion pack in lieu of an actual sequel.

Yeah, I'd say that fanbase is pretty sound.

It DEFINITELY isn't a Bioware game, I'll tell you that for free.

I think its probably the Elder Scrolls. Though there are some douchebags and some elitism with regards to Morrowind players thinking Oblivion is a piece of steaming crap, because the game(s) are single player, there is less elitism than there probably should be, whilst way more modding than I've seen in any other singleplayer game.

The Demon's Souls fan base is pretty good from what I've seen.

But I can tell you that the Diablo 3 fan base is one of the most consistently angry fan bases around. Just check out the Diablo 3 Facebook page.

I'd agree with the other posters on Minecraft. Crafters can get a little defensive if anyone says anything bad about Minecraft, but when you compare them to basically every other fanbase of anything out there, they really aren't that bad.

Eh, i find most FF(insert number) fans enjoy most of the series in varied degrees. Most people that have their favourite FF game are fans of the whole franchise. Its similar to cloud fans - being cloud fans doesn't suddenly stop them from liking the whole game.

And cmon dont tell me you don't have a favourite! thats just heartless.
