Meh,so long as it keeps selling, they're not going to stop.
I would kill Kingdom Hearts though if they don't release the freaking third game already!
There's like 30 ds and psp games and no news of the 3rd game since the trailer.Seriously, why even announce it?

Wow, engage in hyperbole much there have been 2 DS games and 1 PSP game. Also, That....is not the trailer for Kingdom Hearts 3...that is the trailer for Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep...which is like...out already and has been for about 6 months. Good Game by the way, probably the best in the series imo, unlike the DS outings I wouldn't count it as a spin-off, it's actually very integral to the overall plot and as such would essentially consider it the 3rd full entry in the series. So...BAM wish granted, Go play the third Kingdom Hearts game.

Ok, I know they've all been said, but I have to agree with all this. (parts in brackets are when I started playing the series)

Sonic (since the beginning on Master System)
Mario (Since Super Mario Land on Gameboy)
Final Fantasy (FF7 was my first JRPG and what started my love for the genre)
Command & Conquer (since the beginning)
Pokemon (since released in the western world)

Keep in mind, I've been a big fan of these games since I first played them. In the case of Final Fantasy, I've played all the games despite starting at 7 and it pains me so much to say they just need to finish making the series that I used to love.

I'm sure there are many others, but those are my main 5.

Also, I noticed someone mentioned Crystal Dynamics and the Legacy of Kain series. As much as I love that series, I hope they DON'T make any more games for it. The ending was brilliant and made the series complete. Any more would just seem a cash-in.

None, if people enjoy them, why kill their enjoyment just simply because you don't like them..?
I get what you mean, but its almost holds a company back from what they could do with newer games, because the fans of the game will constantly try to get the company to work on the same thing, look at Nintendo, they had to do spin offs, alternates and many sequels and prequels of games to keep their fans happy enough to buy their thing. And I'm not saying that zelda has to die, but its the simple thing that its holding many companies back from greater games because they have to cater to their fans more then the new audience that wants something different from their companies.

Oh if Ganondorf had thought like that in previous games, we wouldn't have to worry about saving her so much and Link could get on with a peaceful life...

Final Fantasy...I never cared for the series, and it seems like there's still 50,000 more games to come.
At least 95% of the games are stand alone and try to differ from each other, making the brand a lot less repetitive than lets say Call of Duty... though Final Fantasy has sort of dabbed off the bast 10 years.

For me any series that has been going with a continuity since the last generation should consider stopping. Mainly because it alienates new players.

Halo. This is kind of a preemptive strike though, since everyone's saying Halo ended on a high note (I've never played Reach or any of the recent games other than Halo 3). Bungie has stopped development of Halo, but we all know Microsoft is just gonna milk that poor cash cow.
Given the history of what happens to franchises when they switch over to a new team... this is probably every Halo fan's nightmare.

From a developer POV, they're stuck between playing it safe (and watching stagnation set in) or trying to shake things up (and risk alienating fans).

I'm pretty sure that after this next installment Mass Effect will end, so why people want it to end so badly now I don't know, besides, I like it. Also sports games with numbers at the end? If people like to play sports simulations then leave them to it, it's not like they try to win any awards that aren't categorised under "Sports", or that they are in any way harmful to the gaming community by existing is it?

Anyway, Halo should stop because it's fine where it is and it did it's job admirably during it's reign. Call Of Duty went from an improved Medal of Honour to it's own thing with Modern Warfare, that's respectable, but then it poked the gaming community with a stick saying "look, we're still not like Medal of Honour, it's modern! again!" It's tired, go to the far future or just do something else.

Finally, GTA. Don't get me wrong, I want another yet, the mix of GTA4 and San Andreas where fun and grit combine to become what GTA4 forgot to be is so promising. But theres only so many games where you can hide "Drive there, shoot them, take this, bring it back, I despite being a 35-60 adult will never offer to drive you anywhere" behind slightly altered stories and parody based humour. Rockstar have proven that they can innovate, Red Dead was a little flat mission wise but the story was more serious at times and the genre was cool. L.A Noire looks as if it may rock my world too. So basically, make new things Rockstar, keep innovating. And change your mission layouts to something other than violent games of tag and fetch.

I'm a Final Fantasy fan, so I don't vouch for it being killed off completely, but I do want them to go back to the formula that made IX and earlier so great.

OT: Yearly sports games, CoD, and Sonic. Especially Sonic. SEGA killed my childhood friend, and I can't forgive them.

Not a single one. It would make me a dick if I wanted a series to die if other people still love it.

My most anticipated game of the year: The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

I'd like Assassin's Creed to take a year off. Irregardless if it takes a year to pump out an AC game, one year is just too soon.

Mario.

Edit: Slightly unfair. Also, since the actual topic seems a bit selfish, my answers are more along the lines of the question "Which game series' don't require a sequel or have been running too long and become stale with lack of innovation or change."

Mario. Portal. Sonic. Final Fantasy. Call of Duty. Killzone. Battlefield. Pretty much everything Nintendo makes now, actully. Guitar Hero/Rock Band. Need for Speed.

One game that should be killed off to preserve it's memory however is X-Com. Oh please, stop beating the dead horse with terrible sequels that don't ring true to the original core gameplay.

Final Fantasy - Granted I liked FF7 & 10 but overall it seems like Square has been working too hard in trying to top themselves with each new game in the series either with Graphics or new Game elements but forgetting more importantly that the game still needs to be fun.

Sonic, Castlevania, Contra - Classics in their day that are constantly getting desecrated with lame and lamer modern updates.

Dynasty Warrior - Ride through the countryside side mowing down hoards of bad guys again and again and again and again and again and again......until bored.

Kingdom Hearts - Disney and Final Fantasy meet. Nothing more than fanboy service with remakes upon remakes over more than a few platforms.
