The problem with most games based on TV shows is often the exact opposite of the problem with adapting games to movies; they often stick too closely to the source material. If game designers would just take the concept behind a TV show alone and adapt it into something more suited for a game, it would be much better. Let's use Lost as an example:
The concept behind Lost is that people are stranded on a potentially supernatural island, where mystery upon mystery is layered into a complex story and a narrative. New discoveries bring new mysteries and the search for answers drives the entire experience and compels the viewer/player to keep watching/playing. Scarce resources, divisions and disagreements among survivors add relatable drama to an otherwise outlandish premise.
This concept is perfect for a game. But when you take characters, a canon and universe that was written for an episodic TV show and try to force them into a video game while staying close to the source material, you end up with a poor, disjointed effort that will disappoint both fans and non-fans alike. Video game developers need to take only the most basic of a TV show's premise and rebuild it from the ground up for it to work.
