I'm a bit disappointed in you...
Not only is this a repeat of a repeat of a repeat, but you are implying that just because a game doesn't tickle your fancy, that it is over-rated.
(And I mean that in a teasing, lighthearted tone.)

Every game that has a marketing campaign is over-rated by the nature of scolicitation.

Grand Theft Auto and Saint's Row. They're terrible games.

EDIT:

Fallout 3.

its basically Oblivion with a 'nuclear wasteland' map pack and guns...
It doesn't do the original games justice...

Anyway, GTA 4 was the most overrated piece of shit I've ever had the misfortune to play.

i didnt know o.o and not every game is has a stupidly big marketing campaign =/ example ''the path'' and its a great game that gets over looked. resident evil 5 was over hyped and it was just bleh...

Little Big Planet's one that gets on my nerves. This might just be me, but the process of making a level, making sure everything works, playing it through and going back to tweak the mistakes until it causes something else to go wrong doesn't really seem like a good idea for a game.
Grand Theft Auto 4 is another one. Never played it, but I know pepole who thought it was bad.

I didn't have high expectations as i'm not a fan of the series at all. Im down for sandbox environments but GTA games have always seemed like bad action and average driving riddled with gimmicks.

Actually, a lot of critics didn't like it, I dunno why though. On topic, GTAIV was a terrible game.

The entire Halo series.

Sorry, guys. I dare say there will be the odd fan of the games here, but I can't see a single positive thing about the games that makes them any better than any other FPS. I've heard people praise the story, and the graphics of each of the games each time there's a new release, but the simple fact is the graphics really aren't fantastic and the story is just another case of Space Marines transported to Planet X to kill Alien Y. I'm hoping that at least a few people will agree with me, and if not I dare you to watch Yahtzee's review of Halo 3 and not spend the entire length of the video agreeing with him. I will admit the multiplayer modes of the first game was fun, especially on the PC port of the game, but other than that it had no redeeming features.

Yahtzee's view on Halo's story cannot be taken seriously as he only ever played Halo 3 which had the weakest story as it was the very end. Halo 2 took a refreshing view in story telling by letting you play as the alien Arbiter as opposed to 'space marines'. Halo's story is full of war drama, personal conflict, loyalty confliction, religous hegemony, betrayal and revenge as just a few of the many themes put in that game. Saying it's just 'space marines fighting aliens' is such an unfair understatement and the people who ignore the actual story and reduce it to just that are the only ones who are really ignorant. Yahtzees Halo 3 review was something I disagree with greatly and wish people would use something other than a guy with no prior knowledge of Halo spouting accusations of fanboy idiocy and sepculation as fact and actually took an honest look. Just once.
Further more the gameplay is simply functional, the vehicles steer great, the fire fights are wild fun, the gameplay is perfectly balanced and it has enough variations of how to play the game to make it worth your time. It plays great and compared to the other 'prone, iron sight and regenerative health' shooters out there with brown and grey graphics it is really unique. Combine that with all the things you get to play and fiddle with in Halo 3 and believe me, there is something special, saved film, forge, custiomizable multiplayer options, screenshots, four player co-op, campain scoring, skull hunts and the use of online file shares are all good things. I wish people would at least notice that.

So that concludes my little rant, thank you for listening.

as for the topic as I've said before the game I think is really overrated, not bad mind you, has to go to Half Life 2. God how it annoys me when the Valve fanboys scorn me for playing Halo and tell me how great Half Life 2 is only for me to get bored and keep wondering:
"okay... now when do I start having fun... what the hell's going on.... what's my objective?"

Finally this thread has been done a million times now and it is always the same answer 'Halo 3' or 'Halo series'.

I still think GTA series is more overrated than Halo series
I remember when San Andreas was coming out and the selling features were that you could swim and get fat. :/

The Final Fantasy series.
The early games up till 6 are good. 7 is a good game, but overrated as hell, and that fanbase is what drags down the rest of the series. I can't stand to look at 13, because they're so clearly trying to make it feel like 7. Nomura admitted he designed the main character to look like Cloud.

9 was still good, as it was a tribute to the old style of Final Fantasy, but the main villain sucked.
All the Final Fantasy games are still well made games, but not nearly the best of their genre.

I can admit it is functional, and indeed colourful, but even after reading your description and comparing it to my own experiences playing the games it still comes across as little more than Unreal II: The Awakening with a longer, more dragged out plot. I, and I'm sure many others, believe that the one and only true reason behind the success of such a series is that the game was the savior of the Xbox when it first arose on the market, being one the few games that made the Xbox seem worth a glance before it had a large array of games out for it.
