In my opinion, last year No More Heroes surpassed RE4 as most overrated game of all time: at least RE4 was good.

The consensus on this site however is different but quite on the mark as well: GTA4 voted most overrated of 2008 closely followed by SSBB and Fable 2.
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.87884?page=1

EDIT: I'm sorry, since I last checked Fable 2 creeped past SSBB to take the #2 spot as most overrated game of 2008.

Um... GTA4 and Half-Life 2. Vice City was the best GTA game and only good improvement in Half-Life was the gravity gun and after a while it kinda gets boring imho. You're just basically picking up things and throwing it at enemies... It gets irritating when you're in an area without enough effective objects to use, you're just running back and forth, hoping you don't die on the way. I don't know why but they could have used the physics engine more, I mean a 5 year old could have thought of the puzzles they give you. I don't know why people praised both these games better than others, they have just as many downsides or reasons to be mediocre as other games.

Honestly when I saw this topic the first thing that came to mind was Halo and the reason being is that Tribes: aerial assault was a much more fun game for my friends and I to play since it was just plain fun with many different options that made it feel slightly RPGish and cover and X, Y, and Z axis all of the time, instead of just in vehicles, with the players having booster packs which would take them high into the air.

Guilty secret: I liked Assassins Creed.

But I think that Beyond Good and Evil, the orginial Half Life and Oblivion are all over-rated.

i don't think LoZ: Wind Waker was as good as is was made out to be. i don't reckon it deserved the 10/10 it got on every review.

The entire Halo series.

Sorry, guys. I dare say there will be the odd fan of the games here, but I can't see a single positive thing about the games that makes them any better than any other FPS. I've heard people praise the story, and the graphics of each of the games each time there's a new release, but the simple fact is the graphics really aren't fantastic and the story is just another case of Space Marines transported to Planet X to kill Alien Y. I'm hoping that at least a few people will agree with me, and if not I dare you to watch Yahtzee's review of Halo 3 and not spend the entire length of the video agreeing with him. I will admit the multiplayer modes of the first game was fun, especially on the PC port of the game, but other than that it had no redeeming features.
Yahtzee's view on Halo's story cannot be taken seriously as he only ever played Halo 3 which had the weakest story as it was the very end. Halo 2 took a refreshing view in story telling by letting you play as the alien Arbiter as opposed to 'space marines'. Halo's story is full of war drama, personal conflict, loyalty confliction, religous hegemony, betrayal and revenge as just a few of the many themes put in that game. Saying it's just 'space marines fighting aliens' is such an unfair understatement and the people who ignore the actual story and reduce it to just that are the only ones who are really ignorant. Yahtzees Halo 3 review was something I disagree with greatly and wish people would use something other than a guy with no prior knowledge of Halo spouting accusations of fanboy idiocy and sepculation as fact and actually took an honest look. Just once.
Further more the gameplay is simply functional, the vehicles steer great, the fire fights are wild fun, the gameplay is perfectly balanced and it has enough variations of how to play the game to make it worth your time. It plays great and compared to the other 'prone, iron sight and regenerative health' shooters out there with brown and grey graphics it is really unique. Combine that with all the things you get to play and fiddle with in Halo 3 and believe me, there is something special, saved film, forge, custiomizable multiplayer options, screenshots, four player co-op, campain scoring, skull hunts and the use of online file shares are all good things. I wish people would at least notice that.

So that concludes my little rant, thank you for listening.

as for the topic as I've said before the game I think is really overrated, not bad mind you, has to go to Half Life 2. God how it annoys me when the Valve fanboys scorn me for playing Halo and tell me how great Half Life 2 is only for me to get bored and keep wondering:
"okay... now when do I start having fun... what the hell's going on.... what's my objective?"

Finally this thread has been done a million times now and it is always the same answer 'Halo 3' or 'Halo series'.
Thank you you just did the world a favor, halo series are good,
i bow.

half life, all of them, its a decent fps whit some oblivious puzzles, but i just dont see whats so epic about them.

mass effect, i found it incredibly boring whit no immersion or interesting characters.

and worse of all, the sims, "pretending" to live a boring life and designing fabulous houses just dosent appeal to me.

Halo.

It fuckin sucks. I honestly don't see the big deal. Its really just a very genaric shooter. It's no better than any other FPS I've played before. People love to praise the story, but I don't get how you can get into a story were the main character might as well be a goddamn robot and people love to praise the graphics, the graphics didn't get good in Halo until the third one. So yeah Halo is the most overrated game of all time.

Half Life in general: Because it wasn't fun, and no one seems to just SHUT UP about it.
The entire final fantasy series: Probaly due to me not liking JRPG's in general, but, I hated all the ones I attempted playing.
On a side note, (despite the fact I may swell tape my Xbox 360 shut now because of how often I play it,) I think Halo (or Halo 3, at least) might have been a TAD overated, but not as much as some other games I've played (such as half-life).
EDIT: Oh, and I forgot to say CoD 4 and World at War were overated. Sure, single player was absoloutly awesome (I'll probaly buy modern warfare 2 just for that), but the multiplayer was awful, repetitive and full of people screaming that you were a) a geek if you were a higher rank than them or b) a noob if you were a lower rank than them. Oh, and the glitchers in World at War...

Chronotrigger. I'll take this back if the redeeming qualities kicked in after the trip to the post apocalyptic wasteland, but personally I could never get past that. Both the plot and characters seemed cliche, and there's no way I was sticking around just for the battle system or art design.
