Risen. Risen is a must-play - and it's only good on PC.
Recettear's a good, quirky indie title.

Download Spelunky and Desktop Dungeons (free stuff) and you'll be hooked for quite a while.

And finally, I've recently been enjoying Divinity 2: Dragon Knight Saga.

There. Now your next three thousand dollars of disposable income are spoken for.

Civilization 2 (the last good version), Dungeon Keeper 1 & 2, and... Minecraft.

Morrowind and Oblivion are must buys if you like RPGs. Get both of them (Game of the Year Editions if possible). They're both good and do different things really well.

Mount & Blade is another must buy. Warband is going for (iirc) $20 on Steam.

Battlefield Bad Company 2 is pretty fun. The story's not spectacular, but the characters are mildly entertaining, and the destruction physics are fun.

All I have on the top of my head.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein. It's old, it's unrealistic, and by God it's fun.

Hearts of Iron 2 (or 3, which I personally didn't like) and Crusader Kings are also amazingly in-depth Grand Strategy games set during World War 2 and the Medieval period respectively. You can choose any country you like, so have fun with Bhutan or the County of Surrey if that's your thing.

Audiosurf: If you like music at all, get this. It's a very fun way to listen to it.
Seconded. Very fun in a simple guitar hero kinda way

Call of Duty: Black Ops: Forget the haters. If you like FPS games at all, you should love this game's multi-player. Tons of customization, an RPG style system of leveling, and constant close-range combat. Dodge the single-player in this as well, because it's very average. And I found the first level to be plain offensive.
I'd give it a miss personally, worth nowhere near the $90 on steam. See if you can grab COD4 instead, it's basically identical as far as gameplay goes, and nowhere near as expensive. Plus you get a decent SP campaign as well

Battlefield BC2 is a steal at the $20 price point and the Vietnam expansion is $15 well spent IMO and extends the game by another 5 maps.
IMO BC2:V is not worth it. I didn't find anything worth $15 in it. IF you can find BC2 for $20 grab it, but the multiplayer might be a bit lacking for you.

Go and get the Orange Box. You can't get better value than HL2+EP1+EP2 with Portal and TF2 for $30.

The best bet to find some good, cheap games is to wait for the steam sales. Personally, I always grab the indie game packs (5 games for $5). Sure they aren't all going to be brilliant games, but there's usually one gem in each pack.

Other games to watch for in the sales are:
COD2: decent SP and a good solid shooter;
Alpha Protocol: Plot's a bit hard to follow, bit badly designed in places but reasonable enough to be occasionally fun
Prince Of Persia Trilogy: Sands of Time is brilliant, Warrior Within is average and Two Thrones is a tad iffy. But they do platforming right and are worth playing, if only once.

Oh, and don't forget to grab one of the free packs on steam. Nvidia [http://www.steampowered.com/nvidia/] and ATI [http://steampowered.com/ati_offer1a/].

The Orange Box
Left 4 Dead 1 & 2
Portal (Actually if you wait until 2 is out the price will probably drop)
Beat Hazard (I enjoyed this much more than Audiosurf, it's not very original but it's mindless fun, the demo is on Steam if you wanna try ;D)
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series
Any Call of Duty game
Any Counter Strike game
Day of Defeat 1.3 or Source (I prefer 1.3 more, although I have a clan for it sooo)

The Orange Box is definitely something you can't ignore.

Starcraft 2 is a great introduction not only to the RTS genre, but PC gaming in general.

If you like strategy, Civilization 4 or 5 is great.

Depends on wether you got people to play with or not.

Things can age of kings can good fun, it's still a solid rts today (age of empires III is blasphemy) but i find it be more fun with people(usually us 2,3 vs 5 hardest) then in singleplayer.

There are some multiplatform games that are fairly fun, but you might already own them on another system such as saints row 2 or red faction guerilla.

Something like League of Legends can be fun to be play but it's alot more enjoyable if you got a group of people to be your teammates so you can skype or vent and get used to eachothers tactics. (whoever suggested that when i asked for games a few weeks ago, thanks for that suggestion :p)

Team Fortress 2 used to be fun but i personally feel it went down the drain with the new item shop thingie. I was deeply disappointed by the engineer items too. But you problably like different playstyles so could be good fun.

If you really feel you got waaaaay to much time, start with a mmorpg. I got no idea how WAR is doing now but it should be free to play, limited to level 10. You should be able to find a trial thingie for WoW somewhere. Champions online is free to play now too. Dont know about City of Heroes. It all depends on your personal preferences too.

I think everything else i'm thinking of has already been mentioned. Maybe Titan Quest? Dungeon Siege? There are plenty of games for pc, but frankly, most new releases are crap. Too much focus on graphics and they keep insisting on multiplatforming which always seems to result in poorly ported games released with bugs. For some reason those do sell well apparently so maybe i'm just becoming old and grumpy.

Civ V

The Witcher

STALKER all three games (No I'm not putting in the full stops)

If you like multiplayer shooters Bad Company 2 is the funnest team game around at the moment, but it only beats TF2 because everything can be destroyed in BC2.
Just about everything on GOG but particularly Planescape: Torment, Baldur's Gate II, The Longest Journey, Psychonauts and Beyond Good and Evil.

The world is your oyster really. However avoid Saints Row 2, Dead Space, and GTAIV (needs a beast system but if you can run it at least it plays ok).

Oh and Minecraft.

I agree with most of these suggestions; but as someone mentioned above, go ahead and download Steam. A vigilant eye can nab you some great games at cheap prices; not to mention, it keeps decent track of your gaming library, along with your fellow PC gamers.
