I'd have to say God of War series, gods be chillin' and here comes this crazy pale guy with a taste for blood. Annnnnd, Prototype, Mercer was just a mass extinction waiting to happen! Guy eats people to fuel his powers! (Though, I confess that'd be an epic power to have)

Just thought of this as a subject: what video games have you played where the bad guy(s) were so much more interesting than the protagonist(s) that you were rooting for the baddies to win?

For me, it would definitely have to be the Killzone games. The Helghast had cool accents, bad-ass outfits, nifty experimental weapons, and actual organization and discipline. The good guys just seemed like boring, run-of-the-mill "resistance" fighters, and all they ever did was yell at each other and disobey orders.

I've never played this game, but my brother told me about Sands of Destruction where the main characters (I'd rather not call them good guys or protagonists) want to free every one from the beastmen that have taken over the world by destroying the world itself.

I can't think of any game that I've played where either the bad guy was cool enough for me want to be on their side or where my allies(the good guys) annoyed me enough to make me want to kill them all.

Call of Duty. Fuck America. (note, I live in the US)

Halo. The first episode of Big Picture summarized this.

JRPGs. A smart guy is taken down by a few teenagers with swords. Tell me you aren't kinda pissed off.

Isn't a person in this country keeping you here. Just you wanting the freedom to express yourself in this way.

OT: Can't say I've ever run into this situation. At least, none I can recall. I am one of those people that despises bad guys/evil winning in fictional settings, i.e. movies, books, games, etc., though. There's more than enough of that in real life. Though I never did play Prototype. I'd heard about it and thought the concept was pretty cool, so perhaps that?

Mass Effect 2&3! And no I'm not being an ass, I just love Martin Sheen's acting and the characterization of the Illusive Man.

Go team Cerberus!

Same, I built my character as a massive racist from the start, and was thrilled that let me join them. I was a little pissed that they are back to being the bad guys in 3.

On the other hand, I really do support Armacham in the fear series. I mean think about it from the military wings POV. All they know is that the RnD wing gives them kick arse clones and equipment to use, so maybe they don't question exactly where all this gucci shit comes from. Suddenly, they get report after report of their mates being killed by failed experiments and vaguely worded warnings from high up that something very bad is going down.

Next thing they know, they are criminals, being hunted by US special forces and some crazy ************ who moves far to fast to see. But they know that they have to hold off because whatever is causing this, it cannot be allowed out into the world. Then, and remember the average grunt has no idea why, a nuke goes off in their city, wiping out hundreds of their friends and family. THe army is no where to be seen, the police are overrun and that just leaves the forces of Armacham to stop the evil little girl. Still there are failed experiments trying to stop them, claiming that they are just trying to cover up the evidence.

But no matter what the public think, no matter how long the US wants to delay in sending in some decently armed forces, Armacham troops continue to suit up in their bright blue helmets and die for men and women who will never know their name.

OT: None, really. All the games I play have not-terrible protagonists and non-sympathetic enemies.

A stack of modern shooters that pin Russia vs US.

Sorry, USbros, but i like Russia more and in a couple of the games the Russians are clearly in the right (easy example - MW2, where a US secret agent killed hundreds if not thousands of unarmed civilians.)

The Locust in Gears of War. The entire series they got the shitty end of the stick, stuck underground with the Lambent, Pendulum war disturbs what little Imulsion free territory they have, and then Adam Fenix shits the bed working on a cure, all leading up to their only option, opening up a second front against a technologically superior foe. Plus General RAAM is a badass.

Pay attention to the story! The US was framed by Makarov (who was Russian).

KILLZONE. Honestly, I played KZ3 recently, and just from the starting cinematic it was like "now that the combat is over for a little while, the Helghast are getting organised again, so we sent in a bunch of colourful characters to wreck that s***". I've never seen a real reason to try and murder them all, they should have been allowed to declare independance and everyone just leave it at that. Aside from that, the Helghast have interesting technology, used to be the underdogs in a big way, and all look like little Darth Vaders. What's not to like?

P.S. In the God of War series, I can't sympathise with Kratos at all. Killing Ares and a few of the other gods too I got, but he just murders everyone in his way (especially what he did to Midas). This makes him a badass, yes, but it also makes him a prick. There are plenty of badasses that don't feel the need to murder innocent people and still have the same awesome. Kratos is pretty much a plot device now; any bullshit he's had to endure at the hands of the gods is paid back in blood, now he's just a reason for gods and titans and whatnot to be killed.
