EVE Online and Patrician III. Take the depth and complexity in battle and trade of a game like EVE, throw in a player-driven economy based on Patrician-esque construction models, and set it in the 14th century Hanseatic League.

Same church, different pew: Sid Meier's Pirates! meets World of Warcraft (and don't say Pirates of the Burning Sea. That game sucked.)

Diablo and Call of Duty; A classic RPG with a nice shooting mechanic. Seems foolproof to me.
