Personally I hate the obligatory tutorials. NO ONE wants a fucking obligatory tutorial, and if your game is so fucking complicated that it REQUIRES one, then your game has a major problem with gameplay and needs to go back to the drawing board.

Also, the whole inclusion of story elements IN the tutorial does in fact NOT make it any more interesting, nor does it hide the fact that we're stuck in a goddamn tutorial. It ain't fooling anyone so STOP!

All the soldiers beside delta squad had mask on. And tons of them died. So yeah...most of the people in mask are normal killed off somehow. And im not sure who was pissed off. I like Fallout 3, ending kind of left it open if you were alive or not. But all im saying is, they can't have the bad guys win at the end, unless you are the bad guys..Like Overlord, your job was to kill off the other main baddies so you can rule, and found out that you were the hero turn evil. For me I was evil and rule with a Iron fist lol.

I have yet to see a game that has EVER broken the cliche of "You win! You beat the guys opposing you!" To put it simpler, I haven't found a game that makes the main player fail.

.......If you still don't get it, a game where Master Chief gets killed by Truth and the Rings fire. A game where the Enclave defeat the Brotherhood of Steel. A game where Lucien actually kills the nameless Hero.
I've seen a couple games like this on the Commodore 64. Not completely "you fail" but certainly fairly mean-spirited endings with an unexpected twist. Huge long action adventure games too, that took ages to complete. Can't remember the names of the games, but one had you going to an alien planet to stop them from blowing up Earth. Once you win the game, the game congratulates you and then says that even though you saved the Earth from destruction you are screwed anyway because now you are stranded on the planet forever and can't get home, and no-one is stupid enough to rescue you.

FF6 and SMT:Nocturne did something like it by

Having the bad guy blow the world to hell

but it would be a massive ***** slap to have the MC lose but it could be intresting if that was a possible ending. Also The ice floor puzzle where the floors is so slippery that only certian things can stop your movemnt and only being to move one direction really annoy me

Though I don't quite care as passionately as you seem to, I second this. When I got into the first Splinter Cell, I had no memory card for reasons I cannot remember. Now I would have had no problem in ploughing through the actual levels every time I wanted to play but the frakkin' tutorial stopped me from being able to bear the game without putting in the 'all levels' code.

In RPGs, starging your quest out in jail or a bar (though it did work for Bard's Tale).

FPS: Zombies...

Plot: Your boss ends up really being the bad guy in the end, and other mindless "plot twists" that really only serve to add a couple extra levels.

The only reason why they don't do this, is because people will be way to piss off that they work that hard to beat the game and bam, they lose at the end no matter what. Also What I hate is when you have a cool mask side kick, they die at times. Why do all the people in mask have to die? I would prefer some of the people with their faces showing dieing instead of the mask people..but I guess that what happens...

Note to self..never wear a mask when going to battle.
Also, that Fable hero had a name...it just varied...I'm a fat, pale, horribly scarrd man named King (i lost alot of fights...learning how to block that late in the game is bull)

Dude, that's exactly why this thread was started. Most of the armed force servicemen and women I know are really cool too, but in videogames, the majority are big, loud, angry, and douchebags. And bringing up that SOME games don't have them like that is helping the threads author make their point stronger. No, some games are not like that. Yes, most are. You agree, and don't even know it, dude.

I don't like the whole stoic, apeman protagonist thing. I'd like to play as an intelligent and interesting character for once. Like commander keen

God damn that sexy spaceman
cough* Gordon Freedman
Well we don't really know how intelligent he is...
as far as we can tell, he's an apeman physicist mix. He pushes things into things and shoots things.

Plus he never says a word. Oh, and he has a pony tail.
I didn't find him very interesting :S
He's got a PhD in theoretical physics, and he doesn't look overexxagerated in the muscular department on the official artwork, rather, he's pretty slim.
I'll give you this actually, he isn't your normal muscley protagonist. He's relatively interesting as a character too in my opinion...
yeah you're both right
pony tail still throws me off a bit
why doesn't he just cut it off? It would be so easy...
I'd say most of the protagonists in the Silent Hill series are not muscle-bound morons.

Another excellent topic. Just cause I'm a forum fan, or a gamer, or anything, doesn't mean I have no social life. I'm going out now, to...honestly, waste time at the mall, but I'm a bad example.

Force Unleashed, if you go for the actual canon ending, (the one that is actually sort of good), Starkiller dies. However you don't really fail, since you don't die in vain I guess...

Another cliche that makes me furious is when in horror shooters your partner always says :"Hey, even though there are dozens of creatures creeping around and trying to rip our heads off, let's split up!" And if the game is a FPS, your character won't even try to protest, because he,, most likely, will be mute!
Why are so many main protagonists mute?
Well, a lot of people complain when the right voice ins't used so I believe it's kind of good to keep the main character mute to keep even more people from hating the game for using a weak or overly strong or famous person's voice

Same actually. It would be nice to play as a normal, intelligent bloke instead of some muscle-bound idiot for once.
come on, its not like every protagonist is a.....wait a minute

*reviews list of game protagonist*

DAMMIT
There's probably a fair list of normal protagonists. Just none I can think of.
Frank West from Dead Rising?
And to a lesser extent, the survivors in L4D.
