Fun FPS's like Timesplitters with shit-loads of playable characters and unlockables, something modern games lack. And who can forget more ogjectives with a higher difficulty, that was an awesome feature.

Things like that really made the game worth playing. It also made Timesplitters superior to Call of Duty and Halo any day.

For Point and Click, see the DS, it seems to thrive there tbh.

FPS and WRPG is pretty much the daddy this gen, and last gen was the pinnacle of JRPGs and Hack n Slash, gen before that was action/adventure and platforming, pretty much before that everything was in good quality and quantity, what we need is games to not be cool then we'll go back to having more range, when companies make less money from copying.

OT: Artillery games. I loved Worms and Pocket Tanks but I haven't seen any new ones.
Oh crap, how could i forget artillery games! We definetly need more of those. More than anything else, really.

Beat 'um ups! Though Castle Crashers made a valiant effort to revive some of the fun that beat 'um ups are, it didn't quite make the mark. I still have an emulator with all my favorite arcade games and some I've discovered because of my lust for a good beat 'um up game. Games like Golden Axe, Double Dragon, Streets of Rage, Final Fight and BATTLETOADS!!! I'd kill for a new Battletoads game.

Something that takes a while to make and doesn't have 3/4 expensive expansions 3 months after you bought the game.

Adventure games I agree with, Tombi is my favourite game ever...

A shooter that actually works with maybe some diversity in the game like having to use your brain sometimes with a good co-op mode. Don't get me wrong I like mindless killing as much as the next guy but a shooter where you have to think would be good. kinda like bioshock, but NOT.
Half life 2 annoyed me I kept going in the wrong directions and died about 5 times till I found the EXACT place you were expected to go.
Portal was amazing.

This is actually a pretty fresh thread. I don't recall anything like it.
Consider me genuinely amazed.
To address some of the posts in this thread though, I'd say that if they must bring back space-combat games, at least make them "not clunky". I've played a handful of games from this genre (and another handful if you count flight-combat such as Ace Combat) and I found them very difficult to play. Orientation is always a problem in space (and is rarely properly addressed) and the combat is less thrilling when you're constantly turning left, right, up and down to chase an enemy who is doing the same. Maybe that's just me and my disliking for flight-combat (combat in flight is always going to be difficult, imo, more so with planes/spaceships) but if those problems were fixed, I'd be okay with them.

Dungeon Keeper type RTSs.

Evil Genius was a valiant effort (and is brilliant) but we need more RTSs with weird mechanics as the core part of the game. Like Majesty (or was it Majestic) 2

Point and Motherfucking Click.

I mean, Sam and Max is great, but we need more. We need so much more. And we need Tim Schafer to make some as well.

Hell, two of my favourite games of all time, The Longest Journey and Grim Fandango are both of this sadly forgotten genre. There really is no other genre that could tell a story as well.
This! Add to his list of greats Day of the Tentacle, 7th Guest and Space Quest.

I wish these things would make a comeback. I miss the days of excellent storytelling through point and click games.

I don't know if you can call it a genre but cheat codes for single player. And I mean the real cheat codes where you push a series of buttons to turn them on/off.

I wonder if games like Torchlight will ever become mainstream.

I mean, I've never played similar games such as Diablo, but Torchlight me entertained for an unreasonable amount of time.

The unbelievably unrealistic FPS-games.
The games where your character sprints at 80 km/h and can jump twice it's own height.
The games where there is no such thing as cover, there's just run & gun.
I've been enjoying Nexuiz lately, it's free and is a lot like the first quake.¨
Try it, I downloaded it at the same time as I bought BC2, and I've been playing more Nexuiz. (Don't get me wrong, I think BC2's great)

I would have said RTS.

Now though, with SC2 coming out, and RUSE, SupCom2; what relic with DOW and CoH then I reckon the RTS has innovated enough to still be fresh.
