I'm going to subvert the "horrifying monsters and kickass heroes" theme here and go with Pikachu. Not because he's overly powerful, but because he's a mouse that can take down a dragon with lightning. What hapless burglar would be expecting that?

Pokemon in general would make good guard pets. Who's going to try to rob a mansion with Gyrados in the pool and Arcanine's guarding the lawn?
