For the most part they don't really give you a choice in gender, so I'll usually play whatever gender the protagonist is.
If you're talking about games like Fallout 3 and DAO, I always go male; It feels kinda awkward when you realise you play as a hot sexy ***** in the game, while you can stare at your own hypnotising ass.

I almost always play as a female character, despite being male myself. Yet this isn't because I want to stare at a hotter avatar (though eye candy isn't a bad thing) but more because I want to see more strong females in games. I can count of one hand the number of good games with good female protagonists in them. Primal and Drakan: The Ancient Gates, both on Play Station 2. They're some of my favourite games of all time, and a big part of that are the awesome protagonists, Jen and Ryn.

I play as male, like me. Because it feels wierd pretending to be female, even if I'm only pretending to NPCs, damnit!

Female when I can.

Only exception being BorderLands because if I chose female it would lock me under the one class that I don't like using.

Usually female, though sometimes if I'm going for the full armoured 2 handed sword wielder, I'll go male.

Either gender.
It doesn't matter to me. Both are equal. Both can kill and be killed.
So why should gender make a difference? It doesn't. Still gonna use the character to kill enemies and try not to get killed.
Basically this.

I don't fancy video game characters, so I don't use the old, tired "if I'm gonna look at an ass all day..." excuse.
While in RPGs I initially start with a female character (being female myself), if they don't look good compared to the males, I don't choose them. Basically, I want a toon that looks awesome, gender really isn't an issue at that point.

It depends mostly on whether I'm taking the game very seriously, like Mass Effect, or not, like most MMORPGs.

Any, really.
I don't really feel any particular need to play as a specific gender.
I go by impulse when I create my characters.

Although my main and all my alts except one in WoW is male.
And I don't play my female huntard any more.

More often male than female, though it depends on the game, and I have no idea why I pick certain genders for certain games.

The Baldur's Gate games, I played a male (and also customized the character with recordings of myself doing a bad Ah-nuld impersonation for the various sound triggers).

The Neverwinter Nights games I always played female characters (with a bunch of custom models. Okay, I'll admit, a couple of the characters I made were a bit underdressed, particularly the barbarian in NWN2, who was in total Red Sonja chainmail bikini mode, but hey, it's tradition!)

Oblivion I played a male (custom race, FaceGen-customized face blending photos of Viggo Mortensen and Christian Bale.) Of course, TES games are one of the very few out there that actually have stat differences for males vs females, so there's a bit of justification there.

Any given fighting game...2D or 3D...I will always gravitate towards learning the female characters (assuming there are any) first. Have no idea why.

I didn't realise that Oblivion gave different genders different stats, i guess if that where the case in a game i was playing i'd give it some more thought.

I'd rather play as a male because I'm a male too. Simlpe as that. But I didn't mind playing as a female in Bayonetta or P.N.0.3.
