RTS: C&C/KKnD 2
FPS: Duke Nukem 3D
Racing: Gran Turismo
JRPG: FFX
Survival Horror: Parasite Eve 2 (Still, to this day, I've not found another that I actually LIKE)
Side-Scroller: Both Oddworld games.

Another game that deserve special mention is Dark Earth. Looking back, I'm not sure why I loved that game as a kid but I did.

The first Red Alert is what sold the RTS genre to me. Counter Strike to FPS's, Diablo to Hack & Slash, Final Fantasy 9 to RPGs and Gran Turismo 2 to driving games.

I hear that, I had to re-buy Parasite Eve 2 after I sold it in High School (like an idiot). Now it comfortably sits on my shelf. I kina got into survival horror via Resident Evil 2 but I only beat that game once and really cant play it anymore, unlike Parasite Eve 2.

Hello Kitty Island Adventure.
That got me into gruesome, manly, body exploding, blood covered fps shooters.
Screw you man, Hello Kitty is not a series to get you into FPS. Had you said Barbie horse adventures I would have understood but I'm calling you out! :)

Strategy - AoE series, then CnC after that.
Shooters - Doom was what got me into games in the first place (That and mario) HL 1 for singleplayer, Goldeneye and then Timesplitters is what really got me into multiplayer FPS games properly.
RPG: Pokemon I think, when I was little, LttP on the snes got me into adventur-ey RPG games. I never got into BG2 until recently either, although I played it when younger. Dungeon Siege got me into hack 'n' slash RPGs though.
Platformers: Mario (duh)
Racing: Anything in the XG and F-Zero series. God those games were fun.

There are other genres too, but I don't really play anything other than what's here aside from a few stand-out titles.

A Timesplitters fan! That's rare, high five good sir. Almost no one I know, knows about the series, it's not a big game but it's simply amazing. No game makes fun of itself better than Timesplitters.

Its incredibly rare to find people that enjoyed that game outside of the people I used to play it with. Its the only series I have ever played where I've laughed out loud at some of the humour.

"Er... You go first"
"Ok"

"Er... You go first"
"Ok"
"It's time to SPLIT!"

It's one of my favorite shooters, infact THAT'S the game that really got me into multiplayer shooters at the time. It was amazing, heck I still would take Future Perfect over most of the newer shooters. What other game can you kill a dinosaur, fish robot, zombie, alien, '50s style future man, man made of matches and a hand in a deathmatch? None

Timesplitters freaking rules.

Games that got me into Mulitplayer shooters:

Time Splitters 2 and Red Faction 2

RTS:
Star Craft and Command & Conquer

Definitely. Too many serious grimdark fps games at the moment, who the hell needs a good story when you have good characters, loads of weapons, tons of multiplayer maps and a map editor. It never took itself seriously, which is why I think it was such a fun game.

If it were released on XBLA with online multiplayer I'd start using my 360 again. In fact, a sequel would go down really well - its such a shame the first three did so poorly in sales, so that's doubtful.

Jump&Run: Mario Brothers on the NES

RTS, and first PC game overall: WarCraft II - played that game for ages in skirmish alone

FPS: Duke3D if i have to be honest, but i didn't like shooters back then. The first one i really enjoyed and played from start to finish would be Half-Life

Racing game: Stunts !! Oh how i loved sharing maps with my mates via floppy disk :)

RPG: tough one, but i think it was Baldur's Gate

Oh and of course adventure game: Day of the Tentacle

Oblivion totally got me into Role- playing games.

I'm thinking about making the trip into RTS's but can't seem to find one to really throw myself into and to become good at. I've never understood RTS strategy. Always seem to get shattered.
