what ever happened to the space Sim?!?
Hmmm... lessee...

LucasArts disappeared up their own arseholes.
Volition Inc got bought up and put to making other sorts of games.
Chris Roberts ran away to Hollywood.
Origin was murdered by EA.
Digital Anvil ham handed themselves into oblivion.

Also, relatively poor sales
That's a pretty good summary right there.

Unfortunately, it's dead, and Freelancer was the nail in its coffin.
freelancer was fun.. for about 5 minutes
Hey guys, stop beating up my friend!
If he done something wrong let me kick him too but I likeed Freelancer so I wanna know what is your problem first.
- It took a dump on the brilliant setting of its predecessor and rendered your actions in the first game completely irrelevant.
- The combat was boring.
- Navigation was dreadful.
- The ship designs were some of the worst I have ever seen in a game, space sim or not.
- The story (what little there was) was retarded.
- And much, much more.

Basicaly, they took Starlancer, removed everything that made it awesomely epic (anyone remember the mission to Saturn..?) and shat out an over-hyped, broken mess of a game.
I gues I have to try Starlancer then. Thanks, I was looking for some good and epic game for a long time and this looks like it.

Tie Fighter was the apex of the Space Sims. But it is unlikely that we will get another one, as Lucasarts seems to have an aversion to letting people play as villains when Jedi are so much more bankable.

Both are MMOs but I'd be willing to give them a try.

Not to mention it took a piss on its brilliant predecessor, called it rude names, then broke both his knees.
Indeedie - I loved Starlancer, didn't like Freelancer much. Would have preferred StarLancer 2, myself - finish off the war and defeat those Coalition bar-stewards.

It is indeed. Also, stick to the japanese made fighters. When the time comes, you'll know.

Awesome, that looks great! Hope it does eventually come out, but given that video is from 2008, I dunno if its vapourwared.

Beyond the Red line is a work in progress freeware one - http://www.beyondtheredline.net/

I'd say some sort of joke about how they will release them in the future, something snarky about how that makes the games sci-fi.

Sorry tired. Somebody else do it for me.

I think everyone was more referring to the space-combat games, rather than the sims. As for SimCity 5, its a dead limp called "SimCity: Societies"

Yes, indeed I have missed the point :p Have a look at SSS anyway. [sub]Societies doesn't count...[/sub]

I liked Freelancer though... Admittedly, I was rather late in finding the space sim genre, so I never really got around to playing any others. Only one I played before Freelancer was Tachyon: The Fringe, which I never hear anything about. Ever.

Personally, I enjoyed Tachyon: The Fringe alot, though I replayed it somewhat likely, and its looks have not aged well at all.
