-Julius Caesar defeated Pompey at the Battle of Pharsalus.
-Emperor Valens and a large Roman army was crushed by the Visigoths.
-The Japanese city of Nagasaki was nuked by the Americans.
-The Soviet Union entered the war against Japan by invading Japanese-held Manchuria. This happens to be another major factor (beside the nukes) that led the Japanese to surrender. It also is one of, if not THE most one-sided military engagement in human history.

That is all that really mattered from what I can see. Other than that lots of people were born and died.

29th January [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/January_29]

These are just some of the most notable from the Wikipedia page:

1856 - Queen Victoria institutes the Victoria Cross [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victoria_Cross] - a medal awarded that is the highest military decoration awarded for valour "in the face of the enemy" to members of the armed forces of various Commonwealth countries, and previous British Empire territories.

1886 ? Karl Benz patents the first successful gasoline-driven automobile.

1916 - World War I: Paris is first bombed by German zeppelins.

1944 - Koniuchy Massacre. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koniuchy_massacre]

1967 ? The "ultimate high" of the hippie era, the Mantra-Rock Dance, takes place in San Francisco and features Janis Joplin, Grateful Dead, and Allen Ginsberg.

1991 ? Gulf War: The Battle of Khafji [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Khafji], the first major ground engagement of the war, as well as its deadliest, begins.

1996 ? President Jacques Chirac announces a "definitive end" to French nuclear weapons testing.

2002 ? In his State of the Union Address, President George W. Bush describes "regimes that sponsor terror" as an Axis of Evil, in which he includes Iraq, Iran and North Korea.

2005 ? The first direct commercial flights from mainland China (from Guangzhou) to Taiwan since 1949 arrived in Taipei. Shortly afterwards, a China Airlines flight lands in Beijing.

On my birthday (August 21st):

1831 ? Nat Turner leads black slaves and free blacks in a rebellion.
1911 ? The Mona Lisa is stolen by a Louvre employee.
1959 ? President Dwight D. Eisenhower signs an executive order proclaiming Hawaii the 50th state of the union. Hawaii's admission is currently commemorated by Hawaii Admission Day

Yeah, not a lot of important events, I suppose. But apparently Counter Strike: Global Offensive is being released on August 21st, 2012, which just completely ruins my year. :\

September 27th
1066 ? William the Conqueror and his army set sail from the mouth of the Somme River, beginning the Norman Conquest of England. I knew about this one...
1777 ? Lancaster, Pennsylvania is the capital of the United States, for one day. Kinda interesting i guess...
1937 ? Balinese Tiger declared extinct. Not cool...
1998 ? The Google internet search engine retrospectively claims this as its birthday. Maybe thats why I'm so full of useless information....

And its World Tourism Day apparently...

1st November 1988. The most important thing I can see on wikipedia would be the formal formation of the European Union in 1993. Not bad.

Also, obviously, holiday-wise, the All Saints Day / Day of the Dead (first day)

Nothing too exciting for me unfortunately.

I just know that a Pope died and that the world might end.

It won't of course, but that would be one hell of a party!
