What happened to kids cartoons?

So the other day I was sitting at home, when my seven year old sister asked me if I wanted to watch an episode of Spongebob Squarepants with her. Remembering how much I used to worship the show a decade ago, I willingly agreed.

Unfortunately, I fell out with Spongebob around the time the movie was released, so I had no idea what kind of changes the show had undergone over the years.

As soon as the show started, I was appalled at what I saw:

All the charm that the show possessed when I was a kid was gone. The plot barely made any sense, and didn't actually go anywhere. Spongebob and his friends ran around acting goofy, but there wasn't anything memorable or even entertaining about it. Everything about it was so insulting that any moral message they were trying to get across was lost under the rotten presentation. They actually needed to spell out what they were trying to do so you wouldn't be left scratching your head at the end saying "what the hell did I just watch?"

It seems that this is happening with kids programs everywhere on TV, relying on shiny objects and flimsy gimmicks to entertain the audience, rather than make something worth watching.

Perhaps I'm getting mad over nothing, but it irked me enough to write about it on the Escapist Forums. Whatever, if anyone needs me I'll be in the angry dome.

PS- no MLP recommendations please, tried it, liked it.

I have noticed that too. It is simply corporate butt holes that cannot quench their greed and in turn rely on cheap gimmick over quality so they do not have to spend as much money on something that may not have a profitable return. No one is taking risks when there is money to be made.

(Or lost)

Spongebob has always been that terrible in my eyes, but that's beside the point.

The fact of the matter is that intellectualism is losing value in society and therefore the number of successful cartoons that are well-written, thoughtful, and genuinely funny will dwindle. It's either that, or your preferences as a kid are not the preferences you have now. In fact, that's more likely the case.

Only shows I can think of are Adventure Time and the current new Looney Tunes series. Those are far more intelligent that most Nick shows.

Ive gone back and watched the old Spongebob episodes and I really dont know why I used to watch it, so I cant really connect to the problem.

Now imagine yourself in your 30's....

All cartoons you love will have have changed.

It happened to us....

The ones we loved as children are no more (except Thundercats which somehow managed to get a reboot and not suck giant hairy monkey balls).

It is not so much that cartoons have changed, but that you have changed. Let me be blunt: people were stupid when they were kids. They liked stupid things.

In fact it managed to rock massive furry Cheetara tits. I love that show.

Back in my day, sailors ate spinach to defeat their enemies, 5 year old super powered girls pwned the devil and mutants alike, and middle school students tried to scam their peers.

And I really miss the 5 year old super heroes right now.

To all Nostalgia Driven people everywhere I state this undeniable fact.

When you get older you remember the best parts of your favorite shows and forget about all the crap that it was surrounded by. Then when you look at what is available you see the garbage on the surface and don't search for the gems hidden underneath like you did as a kid and then assume it is all crap.

There will always be crap and there will always be those gems just waiting to be discovered, sometimes there will be lots of good things that come out at once and other times it will be a slow trickle.

Also if you want a good series Avatar the legend of Korra will be out soon, and the new Thundercats is good.

They didn't change. You just grew up. Though Spongebob has declined over time, but mostly you just grew up.

There are still good cartoons though. Adventure Time is awesome. The new Thundercats is also great. Love Regular Show.

Spongebob has just been around for too long, plain and simple. It's a great show (The movie is good too) but they're running out of ideas and getting sloppy with the execution.

And no my judgement isn't being clouded by nostalgia goggles. The older Spongebob episodes are still hilarious and I will always watch them if they're on.

The modern shows assume kids have a short attention span, which isn't entirely incorrect. Society has become faster, resulting in more slapstick and random humor. TV shows basically mirror the society out of which they've come.

I dunno...I can watch a lot of the same shows I watched as a kid as an adult and enjoy them just as much (the one exception being the Sailor Moon dub....god was that a piece of shit)

It's not just nostalgia goggles if you can rewatch something objectively and say, "Yeah, it's not exactly what I remember, but still pretty damn good"

Sponge Bob is suffering from a disease known as BEEN ON THE AIR TOO LONG. The Simpsons has a bad case of it too, so it's not just kids cartoons.

I keep thinking that kids tv is getting progressively better. Seriously, re-watch the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as an adult and you kinda wonder why you ever liked it as a kid. Maybe it's just that at 8 years old, everything is new and exciting.

Oh man, I had such a ThunderCats addiction when I was a youngster... *rocks on the his chair on the porch* ...course now that I've seen it again it's baaaaadddd.

He-Man is still exactly the same though. Dude was right, he has the power. Staying Power! *slinks off in shame*
