It is not so much that cartoons have changed, but that you have changed. Let me be blunt: people were stupid when they were kids. They liked stupid things.
I dunno...I can watch a lot of the same shows I watched as a kid as an adult and enjoy them just as much (the one exception being the Sailor Moon dub....god was that a piece of shit)

It's not just nostalgia goggles if you can rewatch something objectively and say, "Yeah, it's not exactly what I remember, but still pretty damn good"
I'm not saying that you couldn't of watched actually good shows as kid, but most of the stuff you enjoy as a child is crap.

I must know what garbage in Popeye that you speak of.
I am talking about for every good show like MLP FIM, Samuari Jack, Megas XLR and ATLA there are a dozen shows like Bob's burgers, I Carly, MLP G 3.5, "4 Kids" dubbed anime, and EXTREME loony toons
You're saying Popeye is not a good show? Now I know there's something wrong here, but I'll bite.

MLP: FiM has no nostalgic value whatsoever, it came out last year. Never watched Megas or ATLA. Samurai Jack, I can't rightly say. But we're getting away from my original statement: I must know what garbage in Popeye that you speak of.

To put it in very plain speech
there are good shows out there but there is always more crappy ones
This has been true since television began and will be true for the foreseeable future.

I never said Popeye was bad in fact to this day I still enjoy the show.

Those were examples of good shows that are either still around or no longer produced, I used MLP FIM because it is awesome and because it surveys as the counterweight to the horrendous G 3.5 version and arguably all the previous versions.

Only shows I can think of are Adventure Time and the current new Looney Tunes series. Those are far more intelligent that most Nick shows.
I appreciate them not being afraid to try something new with the classic Looney Tunes characters, but when you change all the character's personalities, use a completely different type of humor, (Except for those Wile E. shorts) and largely change the formula of a show, should they really go and use preexisting cartoon icons for this?

Urgh. They made Bugs a selfish dick who takes advantage of Daffy's new-founded stupidity, rather than having Bugs talk circles around him because of how blinded Daffy gets from his bouts of severe greed. that just kills me- the Bugs-Daffy dynamic was so great, and they went and replaced it, for what?
Tiny Tunes already proved that you can make spinoff characters along similar lines as the original Looney Tunes without messing with the original characters' dynamics.
Urgh. I should stop ranting.

But yeah, OP, What happened to cartoons these days?
The internet. It finally caught up to the TV networks.

In a thread about good contemporary cartoons, you're advocating the cancellation of one that's considered, by people in the field of animation to be a respectable show?

Hate on bronies all you want, but FIM doesn't diverse to be cancelled on account of people you don't like on the internet. Its one of the few shows out there that still teaches morals, and does it well, taking the entire episode to demonstrate how it affects the different personalities of each character.
Its animated well, and while your mileage may vary, it is generally accepted to be entertaining and is turning into a big part of the Hub's success, and with a new network for kid's cartoons comes a lot of potential.

All this is great for the younger target audience, in addition to the fact that its one of the very, very few shows on television for young kids that features good female characters.

*insert dude what would happen reference here*

OT: All cartoons suck now because we set the bar to low, kids are getting stupider every day so we give them simplistic stuff that is just slapstick and really bland jokes. Spongbob is a prim example of a show that got dumbed down. If you really want a cartoon that's smart and can be watched by anyone watch My Little Po.....oh....never mind.

I think the OP just noticed that he/she grew up. Admittedly, the quality of cartoons for kids has steadily dwindled over the years, and in my opinion, Spongebob was the start of a very steep downward spiral into terrible quality and execution.

I just wonder why cartoons have to have such a complicated or dumb plot summary every episode, and for every show. I never used to watch cartoons for the moral of it. I watched them because they made me laugh. Why can't they be simple again like the famous Looney Toons? I used to watch that because it was funny, the jokes were silly, and the slapstick was always welcome to a twelve year old's mind.

I miss a lot of great shows that have come and gone, and will never be the same again: Looney Toons, Tiny Toons, Animaniacs, Tom & Jerry, and Road Rovers, just to name a few.

Also, stop watching mlp, im tryin to get it canceled.

*shrugs*

Mostly rose-coloured glasses / selective recall IMO - everyone remembers cartoons from when they were young as being better than they actually were.

Spongebob went from boring to funny to annoying.

Shows now-a-days suck, Regular Show is the only good show that has come out recently.

Avatar: the last airbender is REALLY good too.

Good luck on that, after the first season of MLP:FIM, Hasbro had a increase of 50% in revenue just from that IP alone along with a shit load of respect. It ain't going to happen.

OT: I feel your pain buddy, nostalgia is a powerful drug, I was bored and looked up a bunch of cartoons I used to watch like digimon, monster ranchers and the sort. It was a very painful yet learning experience. XD

Now imagine yourself in your 30's....

(except Thundercats which somehow managed to get a reboot and not suck giant hairy monkey balls).
In fact it managed to rock massive furry Cheetara tits. I love that show.

Yeah, I've noticed this whole dumb cartoons thing too, and I always chalked it up to that I'm older and they're for kids, but really...I cannot agree that anything nowadays even gets close to Animaniacs or Pinky and the Brain and the like. If I watch those shows even now I love them and they're hilarious. Also, I will give it to the Thundercats reboot, not bad folks, not bad at all. <3

I was going to come in here and accuse you of nostalgia, but Spongebob really did decline after the movie. All the one of the writers who made it great went on to make Adventure Time, so go watch that.

Some shows just change as you get older. Some get better because you get the jokes, and some get dumber and you start to question what you liked about the show in the first place.

To name some examples, I've actually been re-watching a lot of old shows lately, some stood up, others didn't.

Hey Arnold - Still good. Liked it when I was 9. Like it now.

Angry Beavers - Decent, but you get kinda annoyed how Norbert is the lazy one but Dagget gets all the pain

Cow and Chicken - Terrible. Knowing I used to love this makes me sad now.

Rocko's Modern Life - Better than Ever

Spongebob - Believe it or not, I'm enjoying it more now. I've been watching it on Netflix and season 1 was terrible. I haven't seen many of the new episodes so I can't speak for those.

EDIT: In regards to modern shows...I actually can't stand Adventure Time. But I do like Regular Show and I also enjoyed Chowder and Flapjack to an extent.

While a lot of it can be attributed to nostalgia, Spongebob has actually gotten worse. I still laugh at the older episodes, while the new ones are simply painful.

Sponge Bob is suffering from a disease known as BEEN ON THE AIR TOO LONG. The Simpsons has a bad case of it too, so it's not just kids cartoons.
That was going to be my statement, too.

Though I don't know much about kids shows today. I don't have cable right now, so I'm probably not going to chase down TV just to look at it.

But I did find a few shows that tickled me even a couple years ago. Meanwhile, I don't think I would have kept watching the Simpsons as long as I did were it not for the habit I got into back when it was awesome.
