Maybe if it fails they drop the subsciption costs to encourage more buyers and then I buy the game.

...Hmm, suddenly I want this game to bomb.
From my understanding, they were going with a microtransaction model.
Just curious, how would that work?
Ever played Guild Wars? Essentially, once you buy the game, it's yours. As they develop additional content, that would cost a little here and there to add such content. Again, once these pieces are bought, they're yours.
ah ok thanks....though I thourght they were going with the subscription model, we'll all have to wait and see

If Old Republic bombs, it will not be the end of Bioware. Just a major set-back. Ye they will probably close down one of thier shops, but the franchise will live on.

And people claiming the reason WoW did so well was because of fanboyism is way off. The reason WoW did so well was because it was an awesome game. And there's a TON of people who claim it still is. I wouldn't know for sure since I quit when Lich King came out.

Okay, so I'm not into MMOs (though I've played a dozen of them,) I'm NOT into Star Wars, and I'm only a mediocre fanboy for Bioware (they haven't impressed me so much since the days of Baldur's Gate and possibly up to KotOR.) But Old Republic just might be the game to get me seriosly playing an MMO again. Not because of fanboyism, but because it looks interestingly fun and also looks to be a well-made game. We will see.

Oh, and Final Fantasy had a HUGE fan-base, Conan had a huge fan-base, LotR had a HUGE fan-base, Warhammer had a huge fan-base, and Dungeons & Dragons has probably the biggest fan-base of all, yet none of them are anywhere close to being a WoW-contender; mainly because no matter how big a fan is, they still have to think twice about logging into a mediocre game over and over again. The reason Ultima Online did so well was because it was the best at the time, The reason Everquest did so well was because it was the best at the time. The reason WoW has been doing so well is because it's the best at this time. None of these games survived due to fanboyism. If that was the case Everquest 2 would have done a whole hell of a lot better.

But anywho, still keeping my eye on The Old Republic cause so far it looks good. Might even be able to talk my friends away from WoW to play it with me. Course they're still kind of pissy about me talking them all into playing WoW and then I quit yet they're all so helplessly addicted. Ah well...

I doubt this will fail. It looks like Bioware is really putting some polish on this game. They seem to understand that there is a lot that they have to work on and a lot that players expect not just from a Bioware KOTOR game, but an MMO. It looks like they are taking old staples and adding interesting twists to make them unique in TOR. The classes and planets (seriously I think I counted at least 16 last time I looked) look interesting. They seem to be working on and revealing a huge back story for the game universe.

I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt here, but I really don't think it will fail. At least, not any time soon. Will it still be here, in the same state, in a year? That is anyone's guess.

So I see it losing steam 3 to 6 months or so down the line as being more probable than an outright failure. In which case, they will probably offer some incentives to play or recruit friends (WoW has done this and still does), which will prolong the games life a bit. In the end, it will become free to play and fade into memory. Something that people speak of as a myth and a ghost. Bioware, EA, and Lucas Arts will happily pocket a rather nice profit, and continue with their own evil plans to conquer the world through our wallets. If it "fails" at all.

Time will tell better than any of us, though.

If The Old Republic fails no other Star Wars MMO will ever be taken seriously. It will kill the idea of a good Star Wars MMO is the main point Iam pointing out here.

Star Wars has a bigger fanbase than Warcraft did before it started.

It definitely wont fail. Whether or not it will threaten World of Warcraft, well that's a different story.

For all those saying this can't fail: What would you have said six months ago if I told you FFXIV would be where it is now?

I see the same sorts of arguments here. It will be good because it's X. Even if it is bad, the fanboys will keep it up. World of Warcraft isn't any better. And so on.

Star Wars, I think, is on it's way out. It's had a lot of disasters, failures, and outright mediocrity inflicted on it over the last decade, to the point where fans take pride in hating it. If this fails, it will speed the decline. It if succeeds (and I hope it will), that could rejuvenate the franchise. Maybe take some of the focus away from the Skywalker clan and put in the Old Republic. Maybe.

You care about it now, but what if it comes out, and it not only flops for sales, but it really let's you down; there's just countless things you hate with it. Then what? I guess it deserved it. I'll wait till it comes out, I'll play it and I'll recommend it to all my friends if they haven't already bought it. It won't be the end of the world if it fails. Bioware will take a big hit, but EA is loaded. They can afford flops like this. At least 1 in 5 games is published by EA, they're friggin' swimming in money. You make it sound like the stock markets are gonna crash if this game flops.

All of this only making me respect BioWare more for taking what seems like such a major risk. Especially in times like these.

I wouldn't even be worried, but a this has already happened. Star Wars Galaxies completely flopped. It's currently dying a slow death. The budget for that was probably much smaller, so it wasn't as bad.

The point is, it could happen
Galaxies died because it completely removed the game in a day and replaced it with a new one (that was really really really bad). it's first few months were actually pretty good for an mmo of that time, plus it was a sand box mmo which draws a different smaller audience, but a very dedicated one. Galaxies essentially scrapped those players for, erm,,, something, the game isn't really anything know.

on topic, I've been following the game sense 08, and I'm pretty sure it will do great. I've followed other MMO's and this one doesn't really feel like its doing the wrong things. It's going to do well (enough), and will hopefully remove the monopoly WoW had on MMO's.

Everyone just goes on with their live.

i disagree. GW2 wont make a dent, and gw1-ers will be the only ones to go there. with error margine ofcourse, SOME new people will go there..

sw:tor, is over hyped, and will fail non the less in my oppinion.
i do give high hopes to the 40.000 mmorpg thing being made though, it looks like it could be a grand succes. though, depends on the payment model. it wil be a shining star if free+ingame payments for bonus stuff. with monthly fee. meh, reasonable, not a grand hit.
guildwars style pay once and be dont with it> i'd go for it myself on day one XD, lol.

If you honestly think Bioware would die just because 1 game failed you are out of your mind.

1 failure versus Dragon Age series, Mass Effect series, the first KoToR, Baldur's Gate and all the other stuff Bioware knocked out of the park. You honestly think they are going anywhere? Not going to happen.

Even if TOR doesn't knock out WoW, or come close, it will be a success.

If it bombs, then I fire up my WoW subscription again, though I really hope it doesn't bomb. I love BioWare, and to have an MMO from them based off of a franchise that I generally love as well? Count me in.

But hey, it's BioWare. They can't fail.
