What happens to a soul when its eaten?

The soul resides in the devourers body, slowly being tortured and forced to feel all that the devourers soul feels. when the devourer dies then the soul is released as a ghost that has been tortured and partly absorbed by the now dead devourer.

That is why all ghosts are unintelligent and can't think logically, they have been tortured in the deepest and most primal way. Poor souls.pun not intentional.

Well, it all depends on what the soul is viewed as in the concept of wherever you assume it is. In an paper-pen-dices RPG I was in, my character was a voodoo-shapeshifter woman with dreadlocks who's other form was a huge tiger(it was an anime RPG, mind you) whom ate her victims in tiger form, trapping their souls as it was bound to a physical part of them, like a bone.
So, the soul was still "attached" to part of it's physical form and couldn't get away unless released. So in that case the eaten soul was trapped.

personally, i think that the eater gains power and the amount of power gained depends on the type of soul
