hmm... invented personal computers and the interwebs? and iphones.... so yeah, we're responsible for the downfall of civilization.
The computer was invented by an Italian man called Babage. It was more a cogitator engine though which was a crank powered computer for math.
Hate to break it to you, but Charles Babbage (the chap who invented the world's first computer; the Difference Engine) was an Englishman; born, raised and indeed died in London.

While the first submarine was indeed built by the Dutchman Cornelius Van Drebbel in 1620 whilst he was living in England, the first design of a submarine was carried out by William Bourne in 1578; an Englishman.

There's more to history than America is the good guy and anyone who opposes it is the bad guy.
Not that I ever said that or believed that like ever, since it's something you ignorant foreigners don't seem to realize about American books.
Let me try another approach. You won't find a South African who'll agree with " The Apartheid Government was worse than the Communists." It's simply ludicrous, I'd need to write a mini-thesis explaining the depths to which it is ignorant. It was bad but I find it highly offensive when someone makes a claim like this. The reason I mentioned the US was to highlight that the greatest and most democratic country on earth actively supported and protected the Apartheid regime and only LATER opposed it based on self-serving political, NOT humanitarian grounds. You can't separate the protectionism.

Let me give you some perspective just so that you don't think I'm some kind of pro-Apartheid nut. My family came to a homeland in protest of Apartheid, my father was on a watch-list. I went to public schools where maybe 40 - 50 of the 600 children were white or Afrikaans; I WAS THE MINORITY. I do not in any way condone or agree with the actions of the previous regime. By the way, I studied Russian history under a Russian Professor.

The reason why I found your comment so offensive is because of the blatant and hypocritical ignorance behind it. If the Apartheid regime was worse than the communists then the US was the evil empire. You said "you ignorant foreigners", you probably didn't mean it this way but you do realize that the meaning of that the words mean "non Americans are ignorant by definition". I mentioned your statement to a Tswana co-worker this morning and he laughed.

You didn't grow up here, you didn't live the history, you weren't exiled; you have no right to spout it. You ignorant fucking bigot. You do not even know.

Edit: How old are you? Cause if you're under-age then I've wasted my time even trying.

South Africa - Open Heart Surgery, Charleze Theron, J.R.R Tolkien, some kind of insane cannon in the 70s, some kind of insane helicopter, CAT Scans, oil from coal, Kreepy Krauly (those swimming pool things).

Recently we're building two "strongest telescopes in the world", I can't remember what they're called but SCIENCE!!! and all that.

A debatable contribution was the war in Angola against the communists.
You also forgot district 9.
My country was the first to use lasers for surgery.
Not that impressive :p.
Oh yeah, forgot about that. Awesome movie.

Would it be fair to say that the United States has invented the biggest debt in history, along with the ability to keep extending their loan limit?

And on a side note, Britain created the Total War series. :3

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tycho_Brahe Woooo... *waves little danish flag*

Also; The first to invent and finish the proper nuclear bomb was in fact the Nazis. But after testing it, they found it to be a too powerful and too devastating a weapon and decided not to use it. And then Hiroshima and Nagasaki was blown to bits and pieces by the Americans with a weapon the Nazis found too evil to use.....

(This is very broad and loose as it's taken directly from memory but the point is still there >>)

sorry to ruin your pick nick, but i do think the submarine was actually a dutch invention.
You're not far wrong buddy, was the invention of a John Phillip Holland born in Clare to an Irish speaking family, then moved to the states. So I can see how you got confused. It was first mass produced by a Polish fellow whose name escapes me at the moment.
the internet provides: The first submersible with reliable information on its construction was built in 1620 by Cornelius Jacobszoon Drebbel, a Dutchman in the service of James I of England.

but! 1896, the Irish-American inventor John Philip Holland designed submarines that, for the first time, made use of internal combustion engines on the surface and electric battery power submerged.

so we were both right. you got the typical modern day submarine, i got the proto essence of the first under water boat thing:p

Canada has graced the world with it's presence. You're welcome.
AND the telephone dammit!
And most of the cast of Firefly, so yeah. We're pretty rad.
we have all this but not insoline for people suffering from diabetes I mean that discovery saved millions. I tend to feel the country isnt to thank for what individuals do however.
Insulin is a Scottish invention :D - and your right, whoever discovered that deserves all the kudos in the world. Scots discovered penicillin and invented the hypodermic needle as well - would be a pretty different world without the scots.
Well according to wiki its half and half and was discovered in Canada.

America has invented a lot of stuff. Some useful (cotton gin, machine gun, zippers, batteries etc) and some things that give us a bad name. (Donuts, Coke, candy corn, fried hamburgers etc)
