what kind of shape were you in when you entered; and how easy is it to enlist, go through a tour of duty, go to college, and come back as an officer with a new, better position?
also, how are people generally chosen for the rangers?
I was getting chubby when I went in, plus constant boozing left me a bit shell shocked. Even had stretch marks like a bear attack on my stomach. Gross. As for the officer path, I did ROTC for a while and I knew it wasn't for me. I'd rather get my boots dirty and take orders. It's all a pretty linear path. To enlist is easy enough. Find a recruiter, do about 10,00 years of paperwork, then before you know it you're on a bus.

I wanted to ask, as I'm going into the Air Force in a few months, how bad is boot camp really? I'm a pretty pudgy guy, but I can run a mile and a half in 12:30, at the worst. (The AF standard). I'm a little worried about it, and I've heard both sides of the story, from horror stories of 20 mile full speed runs, to stories of eight mile slow jogs. Where in that spectrum was the Army? Cus I'm pretty sure the AF will be below that.
Don't worry about the physical side. You WILL get into shape, just never, ever skimp and try to get away with doing less. You'll get where you need to be and beyond. Worry only about getting where you need to be, when you need to be there, and wear the right uniform. The rest all falls into place.
Ah, that's a load off my mind. thank you. Also, as a fantasy nerd, I've heard (and I should be sacked for saying this), that D&D reigns pretty popular in our armed forces. Is this true? (Obviously not in Boot camp, but in either A.I.T. (or whatever the army calls it), or after.)[/quote]
That's more of a regional thing, I think. I've only met two guys in that play it. I myself used to do it quite a bit, but I don't have very many people around that want to try it.
