For me, I use a cup of chamomile tea with a teaspoon of honey, and lacking that, a cup of pomegranate tea. Lacking THAT I eat a banana. The potassium in it helps you fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. Seriously. Look at the ingredients on sleeping pills. Potassium is in there.

I turn my lights off, turn my fan on, and play this semi-quietly with the monitor off. Rainy white noise is so relaxing to me.

Thinking about things with their faces pressed up against my bedroom window usually does the trick :D.

In all seriousness, I just close my eyes and let my brain run wherever it wants to. Eventually I fall asleep.

If I have troubles I eat a good meal. Usually puts me out.

Otherwise I just put on a fan or some other form of white noise.

Not trying to do so until I know that I'm sufficiently tired enough to actually fall asleep. If I lay down, and am not out within 10 minutes, I give myself another half hour of being awake.

When I am tired enough, I'm out minutes after hitting the pillow.

In a perfect world, sex and cuddling with a girl.

In the world I live in now, I usually put on a replay of Friday Night Fights on ESPN3.com and fall asleep with it as background noise. There's something oddly soothing about the sound of two dudes beating each other senseless.

Holding onto a pillow like a lover actually helps me calm down at night, and allows me to sleep more quickly. Talk about being a Hopeless Romantic eh? lol.

Being murdered I suppose would help.

But really, it just takes time for me. My brain is really, really active, (example: waking up from a long sleep and being perfectly capable to articulate and express complex thoughts immediately) so it becomes really a challenge to just get my brain to "shut up".

As it stands its 2:41 in the morning were i am, and despite the fact that i have a desk fan and a window fan both blow an the same time its fucking heating in my room. Since i couldn't sleep i decided that i should go onto the escapist and see if there was anything interesting and i saw this post and was intreaged. I'm sorry to say that all of your advice is useless because it fails to take into acount the ambient temperature of the area the person is in, if any one knows a way to fall asleep when its 37 fucking degrees then let me know, school starts on thursday and i want a good nights sleep.

Melatonin is my friend. One tablet usually puts me in that floaty place that normally only 28 hours without sleep is able to achieve (for a normal person like my bf one tablet knocks him out for a good 9 hours straight.) Pair this with telling yourself a story (as detailed as you can get, and try to make yourself focus on it, no matter how much your mind tries to wander) and you'll be waking up the next morning wondering when the hell you fell asleep.

I just look at pictures a past girlfriend and think of good memories. Then I kinda drift off into a sort of thinking coma until my alarm clock wakes me up.

Edit: listing to this with the speakers on low helps alot too. http://www.youtuberepeat.com/watch/?v=o-3f1QCB810&feature=related

Be very active during the day. If I don't do much physical activity, I can't sleep at all.

I still sometimes have trouble. I'll let my mind wander and then realize I've been laying in bed just thinking for a couple of hours. You'll eventually doze off though. I usually don't go to bed unless I know I'm tired enough to sleep.

Stephen Fry. No one else's voice works quite as well, when it comes to helping me feel relaxed, and fall asleep. Love that guy.

Some gentle exercise is really nice for relaxing, and also tiring yourself out. Although my exercise lately has become a lot more strenuous, since I'm always really high at night for some reason. Half an hour of Caramelldansen and I'm usually ready to drop into bed. If all else fails, I have medication to help me sleep. But it makes me oversleep, so I don't use it if I can help it.

I usually don't fight it. If I can't sleep, I just stay up until I'm to the point of falling asleep in the middle of whatever I'm doing.
