Absolute quiet is preferential, but I often turn on my sound machine (white noise, waves, rain, etc. sounds) to help. I wear an eye pillow. I don't often need to resort to progressive relaxation but I have found that does help. Finally it's always nice to have a cat snuggled somewhere nearby.

This. 100% this. I love the sound of rain, it's so peaceful. It puts me in a state of tranquility.

Closing my eyes usually helps quite a bit. And jet lag, usually does the job good.

But seriously, an exhausting day hiking or canoeing or whatever will make it seem like you fall asleep before your head hits the pillow as you curl up in your sleeping bag.

Creepy music.

Im not even kidding, I get better sleep when I listen to creepy music beforehand.

Especially music with lots of violin.

Nothing I've had insomnia since I was 6 or 7 can't really remember tried a lot of things like that time I tried counting sheep I got to 10,000 and I realized it just estimulated me and filled me with energy so I went out running to the park which although was tiresome just made me want to run more in the end I went to sleep after 10 AM cause I didn't manage to sleep even though had been trying since 8 AM. By the way I like this forum I could find a way to sleep better here.

I tend to have my mind run wild when i sleep, so i generally wait until im dead tired to go to sleep so i wont think of as many things. I generally focus on what i last did, like say playing Modern Warfare2, or Mass Effect 2, and i generaly have dreams about those things o_O

Haha. Well geez, you don't have to make it sound gay. I jest, I jest.

I forgot to add, there are some choice musical scores from Ingrid Michaelson that really knock me out.

I usually have to have all the lights off and listen to music to help me sleep. Sometimes though I fall asleep easier when my cat is sleeping on my pillow next to me.

It's actually a lot more benign than a drug. More of a dietary supplement, really. Takes a few hours to kick in, but usually results in deeper sleep evidenced by a higher prevalence of vivid dreams.

Rain.
Intro song to Mass Effect 2. Short and amazingly powerful. Though sometimes I cackle and laugh maniacally while listening...
Purring cats.
Writing in journal.
Reviewing the day in my head.
Praying.
Saying "CARPE DIEM!"

I'm lucky. I've trained myself to go to sleep whenever I need to. I'm a shift worker you see, and this skill helps me a lot. And a nice cup of chamomile tea helps too.

Right, 4:30 in the afternoon, time for me to go to bed. Got to be up at 1am. Goodnight all!

I will admit I used to do the same with Robert Schimmel. Mind you, this was before iPods had screens.

OT: Usually just lying in bed with my boyfriend helps. I feel almost at peace in such a situation.

Is it just me, or is there no better feeling than having another person in the bed with you. I mean, even on the odd ocassion where my dog decides to join me, I'll feel more at peace.
