This is actually a 2 part topic but I thought I would open it up with the question above. The second part is: What horror game did you have to cheat device your way through so you could keep your sanity?

Fatal Frame is basically my answer to both questions.

Eternal Darkness f*cks me in the head everytime i play it and i generally get scared whenever i go into the next room because i know something's gonna go down, i deliberately don't use the sanity spell thing to stop the wall breaks because it's more fun that way.

I've never used a cheat device before, but i would use it on Silent Hill 2.

Call of Cthlulu: Dark Corners of the Earth. That part that was ripped straight out of Shadow Over Innsmouth where you have to race from room to room, barring doors and jumping out windows to escape the demented horde was just brutal.

Thief: Deadly Shadows. I can still hear the girl in the attic laughing. Only, she's not real, you see. It's her shadow. She's a ghost. The entire Cradle is haunted. And the puppets? The puppets...

I don't think i've ever used a cheat device to get through a horror game, though perhaps Resident Evil 2 on the N64. I was very young at the time and many of the jump scares freaked me the hell out to the point of being unable to play it, so i used a gameshark cart to try and make it a little bit more bearable (the logic being that at least i'd have the ammo to deal with whatever comes my way) although it didn't stop me shitting my britches every time a licker burst through the window.

Amnesia: Justine.
It's a very well made developer mod that's absolutely terrifying, however, I don't believe it's nightmare inducing.

System Shock 2 did once. STALKER has a couple times. But, I'm not prone to nightmares.

Never played that game but I heard it was freaking scary-mazing. Didn't really need a cheat device for SH2 but SH4 I couldn't get through without it and I tried!

I have had a couple of bad dreams involving Dead Space. People may claim that the game isn't scary, but when you find yourself in a dream infested by Necromorphs, well, tell me how you like it.

For the longest time it was Silent Hill (the first one), but then Amnesia: Dark Descent and Justine came along and took that lovely position.

Although, as of late those two seem to have tag teamed and ruined sleep for me some nights.

Totally not fair.

Never really played any horror games. Unless you count the zombie sections of Half Life 2. Seriously, fuck Lowlife. Fucking Ravenholm except it's underground.

Theif 3 for me also. The cradle level. I really hate the undead in that game. Worst of all every time you think you beat the level you have to go back and do something more horrifying.

Oh God, oh God, Amnesia. Oh God. First game I ever cried, sobbed and squealed to. Not exactly in that order. Scared the shit out of me. Big screen, top o' the line headphones, dark. Never played it again. Not gonna cry because of that game again.

Anything to do with the Gray Lady honestly. And the first time you sneak up on the little girl, if you did that it was optional, she uses devil power to morph all big, "what was thAT SOUND?!" But Gray Lady and her monsters were really bad. Especially in the insane rhymey way they talked. "Look an Find, Find and Chase, Chase and Catch, Catch and Tear!"

The original "Alone in the Dark." I played that when I was a kid and it scared the shit out of me. I am sure if I played it now it would have no effect, but just the memory of it in my head is terrifying.

Looking back, hard to believe this game me nightmares...

Amnesia, I played it at night only and because of that, it was totally dark around me when playing. Had headphones on...ahh... and when dad came in my room to tell me to go to sleep at 3am and i didnt hear him come in...oh the scream i cried XD
i loved the game, the idea of having no weapons to save yourself expect to hide in the dark was wonderful!
but on another note... i havent played many horror games...
