What if Saints Row 3, Mass Effect 3, Skyrim, and MW3 (if you're still into that) turn out to be bad?

If Skyrim turned out to be bad, I think I'd cry. I've been waiting on it since it was announced and I'm away to be blowing £129.99 on it. So yeah if it sucked.. I'd die a little inside.
I'd do the same. I have $150USD on the CE of Skyrim. If it sucks, I'll cry, and my professor in game programming will probably make the final exam about 4 times more difficult out of pain. Our entire class has determined Skyrim is our expecting GotY.

I'll be miffed if they mess up Saints Row 3 and Mass Effect 3, but I have a good 6 new games on Steam, and another 3 on the PS3 I haven't had a chance to play, as well as a LOT of PS1 ROMS. So it's not like I'll be running short on games to play.

it's next to impossible for me3 to suck in my eyes, the only reason why i want the game, is to finish the damn story, to have it all wrapped up, anything besides that, that is even remotely good is a bonus in my book, so there is next to no reason why i will not love that game, and with skyrim there is going to be mods galore obviously coming out of the woodwork so that will be awesome also no matter what.

so yeah...bioware and bethesda are basically going to have to TRY to disappoint me.

I've been wondering that actually, since I don't have any of them on preorder I suppose I would just be disappointed and not get any of them. But it really wouldn't have a huge impact on my life.

I still have a lot of I need to beat anyway, so it might be for the best that I not get any new games for awhile anyway.

Ooooooh finally a real thread.

Saint's Row 3: Well I liked the Saint's Row games so far but I could easily see SR3 falling in to the trap of riding it's title and not doing any actual work to the gameplay (CoD syndrome). So it's not so much SR3 as it will be SR2 again. Ultimately I won't be crushed if SR 3 sucks. unless part of the SR3 development was a patch that turned SR2 into GTA4 then I would cry.

Mass Effect 3: Will suck. Haven't you been reading any of the news about it. Now I don't want ME3 to suck. the Mass Effect series is nearly my favorite. I've learned from experience that when Bioware says the word "better" you want to run for the hills. They said the combat in Dragon Age 2 would be better than Origins. Their Ideas on how to "improve" the inventory system was to remove it entirely. People thought the Mako sucked it got the boot as well. They said ME3 will be the best game they ever made. Fuck. Bioware's going to take all the RPG elements out of this RPG in order to help the combat. But the Mass Effect combat is beyond help. It's cover based shooting. The only thing more boring than cover based shooting is watching paint dry. Beige paint. So there's like a 99% chance that ME3 will suck ass. I'll sing hallelujah and skip down the street in my underwhere if it turns out to be good though.

Skyrim: Uh, I don't really know. Skyrim comes out right before Black Friday so I'll wait to see if I can get a deal on it. So I'm not going to pay full price for it anyway. I'll still be bummed because I love Oblivion more than is healthy and Skyrim is shaping up to be an improvement over Oblivion so my hopes are already pretty high. I already don't have any faith in humanity so If Skyrim turns out to be bad it really can't do much damage to my outlook on life. It'll just further drill in the notion that my gut instinct is always right no matter how sexy the Argonians look in the screen shots. [sub]I didn't just say that[/sub]

MW3: I will be fucking thrilled if MW3 is bad. And I don't mean bad in the same way CoD 2 through Black Ops where bad, I'm talking about gut wrenchingly horrendous in a way that makes every CoD fanboys in the world curl up in the fetal position and weep for their mommies. I want this game to induce projectile vomiting and cancer. If that's the case then I'll be ecstatic. That way maybe Activision will think twice before repackaging and delivering the same crap for a ninth time. But if It's just mediocre and boring like all the god damn other ones and still sells a trillion copies, I'll just shed a single tear for good taste and post some questionably witty comment on a message board and get hastily banned by a moderator who tore his gaze away from his kill streak just long enough to notice that someone doesn't like his beloved Modern Warfare.

That would require Bioware making a bad game. While they have made less than perfect games, and while some people have hated unnecessarily on them (DA2), I've never not thoroughly enjoyed a Bioware game.

What if Skyrim sucks? It's something I refuse to consider. No matter how horrible it isn't, I will play it, and enjoy it gosh-durnit!
...
I'm paranoid now, thanks.

You forgot Halo 4 :3

I guess I would keep playing games with replay value...like Rock Band.

I simply follow Yahtee's advice: Do not expect a game to be good. If it is good, you'll have a pleasant surprise. If it is bad, you won't be disappointed.

I find this to be very wise, as too high expectations more often than not lead to disappointment, and too low expectations more often than not lead to either complete neutrality or pleasant surprising.

dont get mixed up between Brink/Homefront with Skyrim/Mass Effect 3

nobody i knew was excited for Brink or Homefront and i certainly wasnt. it was on anyone's most anticipated lists as far as im concerned

Skyrim and Mass Effect 3 are games by expericened developers doing what their good at and part of critically acclaimed franchises

so what if those games are bad?
simple answer, they wont be

You mean What if Saints Row 3, Mass Effect 3, and Skyrim sucked.
we all know MW3 WILL suck. lololllol

but yeah, get depressed and then dive into the other 20 games coming out that look fun.
or maybe buy some older games that i didn't get because I was saving for these titles.

But I doubt that these competent game companies will just pull a duke nukem.

So I've noticed a bit of trend this year: people getting all hyped for a game that turns out to be bad. Just look at Brink, Homefront, and (arguable, and most recently) the demo for the new Space Marines game. This isn't an entirely new phenomenon amongst games.
And I was thinking what if games like Skyrim and Saints Row 3 turn out to be just as bad?
(I get that these are coming from trusted and expierenced developers, but still)
To add more fuel to the discusion fire: You can try to justify your hype and try to convince yourself and everyone else that they are going to be good. Or, you can predict you reactions when these games come out and they turn out to be bad (hypothetically, of course)

PS: Please don't quote my OP. I just got through empting my inbox of the 16 "quote" messages that had been sitting in there a while. If you comment, I promise I'll read it, you don't have to fill my inbox, thanks.
Well the first problem is there's actually a precedent for Space Marines, that being the one on PS2 which, if anyone recalls was advertised as bringing the Warhammer 40k universe to Gamers on their TVs but ended up being Star Craft Ghost without any of the things that make Star Craft, or Warhammer 40k GOOD. So gamers getting excited about that one seems a bit superfluous.

As for the rest of that, first off Saint's Row just about can't suck . . . I mean really, Saint's Row 1 and 2, and the DLC are all great, and the WORST parts of those games are still enjoyable (if a bit tedious . . . fucking chop shop >.<)

as for Mass Effect, it's the end of Sheppard's story, and it's the climax of the series . . . so it's basically a "season finale." It'll have that disapointing aspect of ending a huge chapter of the game, and a huge part of the story but it still will open up to the next part of the story. Though, admittedly, the lack of permanent closure from it not being a full and final ending will suck . . . but that's how it always is.

Frankly, Skyrim I am excited for, not because of the fanboyish "OMG! NEW PART OF FAMILIAR SERIES!" but rather because of the things that are NOT familiar, the new region, the new species of creatures (wooly . . . fucking . . . mamoth.) the new strange magick technology, the marraige system (seemed a bit aesthetic at first, like oh I don't know . . . FABLE, but unlike Fable it has a point) and the Marraige system bleeding into the adventuring system. Though, it makes me wonder if polygamy will be allowed like it was in Fable, because if so . . . you could, if you worked at it, end up with an army of "partners" helping you just . . . well . . . slaughter every dungeon and monster in the game. Might ruin the difficulty curve.

ME3 can't be bad, i already put down the 80 bucks for the Collector's Edition, and even if it does suck i will convince myself it's good, like i did for Fable 3
Sympathy frown =(

We're in the same boat, only I'm incapable of convincing my self something is good when it isn't. So I'm trying to convince my self ME 3 is going to be the worst thing ever so even if it's just "ok" I can be happy with that.

Well lets keep our fingers crossed. Scratch that, you keep your fingers crossed and I'll take the worst possible connotation from every piece of ME3 news I read, and I guess we'll see how it all turns out next year.

If Mass Effect 3 and Skyrim sucks "I'll be forced disembowel myself." Or I'll just play some QWOP to get my sadness and turn it into rage.

On a serious note I have no power over whether a game will suck or not, so I guess I'll just buy 'em, play 'em, and be disappointed. I really hope that isn't the case.

Swearing, lots and lots of swearing. Especially if I manage to get Skyrim early when it still has a high price.
