While I do care, that's only because I'm optimistic about future science and am totally planning to either be immortal or be cryogenically frozen.
I'd expect a space elevator around 2060. By 2190, say, the only people still on the planet are those who don't actually want to leave, and their children who the government aren't able to rescue because of the crazy people being in the way.
In the late 2200s (the decade, that is, not the late 23rd century), millions of spacers visit Earth to say last farewells to our home planet, and just as importantly get utterly demolished in the party of the millenium. People pay good money to be on the last ships out, so they can moon the apocalyptic asteroid, and generally yell "nyah! missed me!"
So yeah, optimistic overall.
