So yeah, don't go to /soc/, it sucks, avoid /b/ unless you want to be desensitized, and /v/ is pretty good sometimes, they can get pretty nasty when VALVe is brought up, and /wg/ has some amazing threads running most of the time.
If you can imagine the Internet as a human being, Wikipedia is it's brain, where all knowledge is stored, Google is probably the eyes, the Escapist is probably it's smarminess and 4Chan, well, 4Chan is the dark part of it's soul. It's horrible, black, shrivelled up little soul.
Basically it's an image board full of children and misfits that think they're cool spouting out what they don't have the balls to say in real life. This is because of the false sense of anonymity given to them because you don't have to create a profile. Wait... that's just /b/ and most /b/tards... Eh, the rest of 4chan isn't half bad, although the /k/ board could do with less 10 year old cod fanboys and more people with actual knowledge of firearms...
I like to think of it as the Mos Eisley of the internet. A wretched hive of scum and villainy, but if you look hard enough, you may find a Han Solo.
/b/ WAS a place of "horror and insanity", but now it's just the cool new thing that kids go on to get "omg so random" humor to use in real life. Repost of a repost of a repost etc.

/mu/ is a pretty terrible board, but mostly because it's just same-old same-old every now and then. Spamming NMH threads is good for a laugh occasionally.

Its a place where all the dark emotions and irrational behaviour of mankind coagulated into an image board of terrible malfeasance, racism, sexism and occasionally incredibly funny comments and images.
It's not a place for the innocent, young or light hearted as those are the first to be eaten alive.
I once made a journey into 4chan and barely made it out with my life and sanity intact.

From what I've heard, 4Chan is like... a 'lighter' version of this websites basement.... Seriously though, do not go into the Escapist's basement! Anything you see on 4Chan is only 1/4th of the horrors in our basement!

There's an amazing amount of irrational hate for 4chan. Even the board which deserves it has many redeeming qualities, primarily that it's often hilarious. It's also, arguably the birthplace of the idea of Anonymous which means it attracts some of the hatred people feel for that non-organisation.
