What is a science fiction universe that you would like to live in?

One where I don't get shot to bits by bounty hunters, pirates, mercenaries or the like.
One where I can make lots and lots of money and become immortal. EVE would would do that just fine, but I'd still have trouble with the getting shot to bits part, but I guess this wouldn't really matter anymore. So long as I can afford more ships.

Star Trek! TNG!

Except you know...if probably be more like Barkley than say Tasha Yarr
Isn't that a good thing?

Barkley has to worry that he spends too much time mucking about on the Holodeck.

Yar has to worry that every time something goes wrong, she has to rush/walk slowly towards the threat, with two rubbish guys as backup, and only ever armed with the same hand weapons everyone else has.

The security on Star Trek is appalling.

Of course, you could end up very unlucky and be in ST:DS9, where everyone is utterly useless, and the mantra "Trying to stop the aliens killing us all makes us the bad guy" is thrown around.

Only once with Data, IIRC, when everyone was high.

(Data should be programmed not to have sex with people who are only doing it because they are high)

oh....yeah....

and she also went into Deanna Troi'S room and went through all her stuff (probably stole her "seducing data" outfit)...

...that was an uncomfortable episode

Logically Data shouldn't have even been able to be high himself.

I'd probably say Star Trek too, since it's pretty much utopia and there's even a few ways to achieve immortality there, and I could just as easily dick around on a holodeck 24/7. I also might go for Star Wars, but only if I could be a Force Sensitive, since being superhuman is awesome, and I already realize how full of it both the Jedi and Sith are, so I wouldn't get tied down to their crappy philosophies either.

Eh, don't the Jedi sorta force force sensitives to become Jedi so they don't become one of two Sith or something?

But yeah, Star Wars has much better fashion than Star Trek, but the WHS is awful. Put some railings around bottomless pits, people.

Oh, there's a question, who'd you rather be stuck with, Wesley or Jar Jar?

Star Wars all the way. The only other science fiction I know anything about is Warhammer 40k. That universe doesn't sound like a fun place to live. But Star Wars on the other hand sounds like a blast.

Depends...if both cases you could be on some planet being invaded, or just be poor and oppressed, or you could be well off on some nice quite paradise.

Well of course, same could be said for real life. But between the two, Warhammer has about six races trying to guarantee I don't get to see tomorrow and they are in a second dark age. Also since I'm human, I'd be conscripted into the Imperial Guard and most likely be killed. Star Wars just seems like a safer bet, since humans are pretty much the dominant species in that universe and Jedi exists.

Star Wars, it would be fun to be a Robin Hood like Smuggler who perhaps took a page from Daenerys Targaryen and had a crew of ex-slaves.

Put me in the pilot's seat of a Hammerhead and I'll be bounty hunting around the Sirius sector until I meet my match in some Edge World pirate. It won't be a long life but I'll get to see a lot before I'm dust!

The Culture by Ian Banks. It's one of the closest things to an honest-to-god utopia in science fiction. It's post scarcity, anarchist but stable due to the impossibly intelligent AI's known as Minds that help run it. Key word being help, they are citizens just like any other human. You can be pretty much anyone or anything you want, and even if your idea of a perfect life is slaughtering people, they'll be willing to set up a lifelike virtual reality in which you can do that at the harm of nobody. If it has a legitimate problem, it's that it is so enjoyable and easy to live there, that people eventually experience all the joy they want and choose to die out of boredom, often well before they reach a millennium old.

Both were far more competent especially in their later years than the fans give them credit for, so good question.

You mean one was gradually made less insufferable while the other just disappeared.

I'd say Wesley only because he makes me look more manly by comparison.

Pokemon!

OT: The world of Space Dandy/Cowboy Bebop... I can choose to be either a bounty hunter or an alien hunter...

Honorable mention go to Pokemon... (Yeah, I'm being serious right now...)

Ian Banks' Culture + 1

Peter Hamilton's Commonwealth is a bit more down and dirty and therefore more interesting but they aren't post scarcity so you still have to have a job.

Star Trek tech is nice but I wouldn't want to live there with all their ranks and people giving orders n what not

Too much bureaucracy in galaxy far far away. Using the force seems kind of cool but you can get the same buzz with commonwealth implants. Gore Bernelli was practically indistinguishable from a god at the end, though I think even he would have had a hard time going up against some one from special circumstances

Universe I definitely wouldn't want to live in would be dune or 40k. Fuck those places

I've always answered this question with Gears of War take on science Fiction (i've been on a Gear's kick lately). My other choices are the Marvel Comic Universe, pointing to Guardians of the Galaxy or Winter Soldier's Noir feel. Love it.

I always really love the feel of Destiny's world so far. I love the fantasy mixed with Science and the whole traveler thing. Sign me up to be a guardian any day.

Star Trek: The Next Generation. Since it's a moneyless, Utopian future I would just not bother working...I would travel the world and galaxy at large to my hearts content until I either die in satisfaction or, get assimilated by The Borg.
