Everyone's got a story for why their pets are named what they are.

One of my cats is named Luna, my little brother got to name her and called her "Luna" after the cat in Sailor Moon. However, Luna in Sailor Moon is all black (and can talk) our Luna has no black on her, but is a tri-color calico. Also while Sailor Moon Luna has short hair our Luna has long hair. And an enormous nose. And looks nothing like the Luna she's named after. >_>

I got to name our youngest cat who is named Fauve because she is also a calico and thus has bright colors. Yes, I am that much of an art nerd.

My third cat is Simba, because he kinda looks like a lion. When we rescued him that was already his name and it fit too well to change it.

My dogs are Sugar, Abbie, and Baxter. Sugar was named by the woman who found her chasing cars because she is "oh-so-sweet" in her words.

Abbie was named by me. Her full name is Abbie Gayle and she has more nicknames than is rational, these include but are not limited to: Mrs. G, Mrs. Gayle, G.G., Abbie G, G., Gigala, Mrs. Gigala, Abigale, Abbie-Gayle, and Ab.

Baxter was named by my mom, when we rescued him his name was Clyde which was a name everyone in the family hated. We all came up with something but no one but me wanted to call him "GIR" after the robot from Invader Zim. Which would have made sense because Baxter is about as stupid as GIR.

I called my pet Rex, because it is the most overused dog name in my country. And because he is a cat.

Smokey (cat), because he's grey. [recently dead]
Setanta (dog), because it sounds cool.
Shadow (cat), because we wanted another S.

I was three when I named Smokey, and my sister named Shadow(I wanted to call her Pooka).

Cats (I named Hoomin):
Marble, because her fur has a kindle of marbled effect.
Willow, because she's willowy?
Hoomin, it fits. I swear he's not a real cat.
Ruby, after Ruby Gloom. He mongs everywhere being all depressed.
Gandalf, he was grey.
The Other One, we ran out of names.

Fish (I named them all):
Fish, he was previously called Squeak from a pair of fishes called 'Bubble and Squeak.
Oscar, just because.
Clive, again, just because.
Dino, see above two answers.

Birds:
Elton and David.
They're both males birds and my brother named them, you'll have to ask him.

I have a ferret called Rorschach, due to the markings on his face.
This means you win life, for two reasons. You named your ferret Rorschach and you have a ferret. XD

Dog - Jade - I have no idea why we named her Jade. Guess it sounded nifty at the time.

Cat - Kenya - That was her name when we adopted her, so I just stayed with it.

I thought about getting him a hat.

EDIT: Ferrets are brilliant, it's like having a puppy crossed between a rat, but it's not as thick as a puppy.

I have an Australian Shepard and a Basset Hound.

The Australian Shepard is named Madison because my mom loved Bridges of Madison County and it was a pretty name for a girl. I love my maddy girl!

The Basset Hound is named Murphy because he looked goofy and I had to think of a goofy name for him. Murphy fits his happy, goofy demeanor.

I named my kitten Chewbacca. I thought it was fitting, and I wouldn't stand for anything else. Yes, it is a female cat, no, she is not loud or terribly hairy. We call her Chewy for short, hence why she likes to bite.

I named my dog Kratos. He's a Great Dane so we figured we needed a name that was strong and confident since he's such a big dog. Ares has been done before so we went with Kratos for something different. Now that I think about it, I should have named him Tiny.
