What is everyone's deal?... (Anime dubbing)

I am a man who enjoys his anime, I personally prefer it to be in english so I can actually understand what is being said. Thats not saying I dont mind subs, I watch Naruto Shippuden just fine. Im just wondering why so many people get so worked up about how english dubbing supposedly sucks.

So I'm not the only one! Yeah, I've always wondered. I mean of course there are bad English dubs here and there (I found Elfen Lied's English dub nearly unwatchable) but for the most part, the English dubs are fine. And some animé, like The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya, Black Lagoon and FLCL, I think are much more enjoyable in English.

i generaly hate the voice actors, the voice they put to certain characters and the general "waky and infantile" things they put in there to make people KNOW they are cartoons, i have seen series that in Japanese give a different context to the series in comparission of what they make it in english (or Spanian Spanish in my case)

people dont understand that just because it is a cartoon some themes are not for kids, so they try to make it "juvenile" or totaly "retarded" wich makes things horrible and out of tune.

also i enjoy Mexican Spanish translation because we have enough words in our dictionary to make it perfectly clear on what tone the things are being said (wich is weird considering Japan is one of the countries with the most simple vocabulary)

and i enjoy sub´s because i learn a little bit of japanese every time i see a series.

i once watched Card Captor Sakura in English dubs... it was so horrible i almost cried, the tunes were out of context, the voice was aufully childish compared to what i was used to hear, and the themes treated where dumbed down to the context of U.S thoughts on being "child safe"

Really, as long as it's not 4Kids then the dub will usually be ok. With the very limited number of English voiceactors for dubbing the voices are usually horrible.

It's funny; I'm the complete opposite. I didn't mine the Elfen Lied dub and I'm usually a gigantic dub nazi. Ghibli films, Hellsing and Elfen Lied are the only tolerable ones I've ever listened to.

I think the stuff by FUNimation is generally very high quality. Plus, their cast of One Piece was selected by Eiichiro Oda so he must like the english voices.
Though I've been watching Dragon Ball Z over again(I'm in the Namek/Ginyu saga's right now)and some of the voice acting started degrading. It sounded like Goku was switching back and forth between two different actors...it was weird.
Though if you're looking for something done by 4Kids, then you're better off with fansubs.

I have nothing against it, but the problem comes with content standards between countries. Japan has a much more open view on stubjects related to umm... *cough* nudity *cough*. The result being we get changes in what's being said and that often result in a good few innuendos (The comment someone has more "talent" came from Japanese anime dubbed in English).

Since the pool of voice actors is greatly less in America, the Dubbed voices sound nothing like the character should. There are a few Animes that are good in English though. Fooly Cooly... ETC.

It's basically when it's dubbed with no relation to the actual orgional story/script, that's what upsets people the most about the whole dubbing issue.

The whole "lousy actors and butchered scripts" criticism may have been true ten or fifteen years ago but the english anime localization houses do a pretty good job nowadays. Anime is censored in odd ways for the tv-air versions (putting swimsuits on characters in a bath for example) but the DVDs are generally uncut.

I prefer dubs because I find subs distracting; always looking at the bottom of the screen I find I miss things going on in the scene.

Also, two more things:

1. Japanese is a very redundant language (they say less with more words).
2. Japanese seiyu are the HAMMIEST ACTORS ON THE PLANET!

Doesn't apply to everyone with this particular opinion, but they're out there... and in here...
Others most likely just don't like it, which is every bit their right, just as its your right to like it.

My personal opinion, if I'm gonna watch a movie/cartoon/etc. I want to watch the animation/acting and listen to the speech. Personally I'd feel like I'm missing out on what's going on if I'm constantly staring at the bottom half of the screen.

If you've ever read subtitles during a movie or anything like that, you'd know it's not that awful. I'm from sweden, and almost every show we have is from the U.S with swedish subtitles, and I can still watch it like a normal person.

Personally i think that sometimes the english dubbed version sounds stupid but there are some instance like in Full Metal Alchemist where i like the english dubbed version better

There's some major anime avatars going on in this thread....

I'm a subs man myself, translation almost always equals deterioration, that can be rectified by translators notes in subs, and things like catchphrases and colloquialisms remain intact.

It's also nice to learn tiny useless bits of Japanese (I went mental when somebody mentioned mercury poisoning outside of Rozen Maiden nd I was like "SUIGIN" then they said it then I was ashamed of myself for straying into wapanese territory.)

I don't really like the voice actors but its a hell lot better than reading the subtitles because if i like the story being told to me and if you think reading is better why don't all read a book smarty pants..... I don't Know what this has all accomplished for me

My guess is because it is not always done properly, or so my friend says. Some lines when translated just don't quite sound right or out of sync when someone is speaking; or in really rare cases soem lines just don't work at all.

But then again this is failure of dubbing in general and it can never really be tackled completely.

Have you ever seen European adverts when dubbed (e.g French to English)?

Seeing the dubs didn't bother me until I started watching the original. It's not that they're really really bad, it's just that the originals are MUCH better. Naruto is a great example because of the constant "Believe it"'s and his oddly pitched voice.

I'm generally fine with both Seiyus and Voice actors.

Someone just listen to Vic Mignogna and tell me it's not amazing.

if it's dubbed badly then it's annoying.
but when anime is dubbed well (like the studio ghibli films) it is way more enjoyable in my opinion. especially as i like to snack while watching things, it means i can let it flow.

I haven't seen that many anime dubs but the ones I have seen have been pretty bad.

I'd watch the Japanese dubs with English subtitles but the Japanese voices just sound so weird to me they're distracting.
