This is my answer also. Deliberately hurting or killing. No lust, thoughts or deeds. Just doing it.

As a very abstract matter like love-hate and good-evil are mostly cultural definitions or personal opinions. There are no boundaries or scale in which the evil and good definitely meets (you can sey that you have a border in your mind that you can say "this is good" and "this is bad" but it is not objective thing), so I don't think there is answer to what does evil essentially boil down to. But like someone wrote about their own mind, I can safely (as cynical as it sounds) say, that there might not be more evil things than the human mind.

I think there is no evil and no good either for thatr matter. There are morals and values of here and now.

Oh you silly people, EVIL in is purest most magnifficent form is not the Sith, The Scourge, The Enclave or even Alex Mercer. It's not doctor Doom, Magnito or Lex Luthor. No, there is only one evil, and that evil is RICHARD.

Augustin presented evil as that wich lacks good, but we can see that through history there has been commited acts of evil that this definition dosen't hold up to.
So I would try to define evil as following: An act wich only benefits one self wich is possibly harmfull to others. It's intention is fully focused on the benefit of oneself and although often tried to be rationalized is without meaning. The greater the evil, the more absurd (that wich is without meaning) the act gets.
Evil is only a valid term within ethics. (By that I mean that I personally laught at all ideas of a divine evil) By ethical term I mean that evil can only be related to actions wich are ethical forbidden, or ethical advised against. Laws are often based on ethics, but it is not in law you can define what is evil.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unit_731 - japanese human experimentation before and during ww2
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_Intelligence_Agency - pretty much responsible for most of the modern day military dictatorships

these guys pretty much sum up evil in the world over the last hundred years or so. there are plenty more samples of human 'evil' nature.

"All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."
-Edmund Burke

if you want to see 'evil' in action read a couple of the news stories from daily rotten, there are always plenty of sick evil fucks in the world.

edit - the romans would not have seen hitler as evil? yeah, sure. cause, ya know, the romans all thought the mass killing of innocent people was a o k.
