Interestingly, a couple of centuries ago, at least in Britain, the 'gendering' of colours was completely inverted. Little girls dressed in blue, little boys in pink.
Really? I didn't hadn't heard that. Wonder why they changed.

But yeah, based on arbitrary gender roles.
Originally, British military uniforms had red jackets, and pink was considered to be a paler form of red, which is why they dressed little boys in pink. When they changed to camoflage to avoid getting shot, it just knid of switched around.

Also, I'm female, and I've always hated pink.

Social construct.
It?s about the only colour that?s that associated with a particular gender, a couple other colours to a lesser extent. Pink was once thought to be a rather luxurious colour and was often used on boys rather than girls. I wonder how the switch occurred.

I don?t like most pinks myself, peachy pinks a fairly nice colour though. Some darker pinks are nice to,just before the point you start hitting purples.

Pink it was love at first sight, yea
Pink when I turn out the light, and
Pink gets me high as a kite
And I think everything is going to be all right
No matter what we do tonight

Before any of you say it, I do know what he's referring to with "Pink".

Black, red, blue and Purple are the best colours in my opinion.

Of cause many will disagree with this comment but... Pink is a cultural phenomina and not something that is truely hard wired. So it can be changed if society forces it or they reject society.

But the way I see pink worn on some of my female friends... I would be inclined to agree about the "Brainwashing" thing. I can't stand seeing it on girls and I prefer something that is a little "different" from the norms of society.

This has Probably already been said but I'll just reinforce it anyway. It's less a case of "What's with girls and pink" and more a case of "What's with girls and societies gender role stereotyping association with the colour pink"

Almost ALL the girls I know personally have some sweat pants with "pink" printed on the ass and it gives me an excuse to read <_< I like pink and I'm a guy!
'PINK' is a brand of clothes made by Victoria's Secret. Almost everything in their catalog have PINK written across it somewhere. Usually the chest or bottom.

Oh, and I was thinking about it. Pink, the color, has become more popular(for men and women) in the last few years because of the whole breast cancer campaign. Even the NFL this last October wore Pink accented clothing for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

(as a female) I think pink being used to express femininity is certainly legitimate, because I hate wearing pink and I feel all...girly. XD

Otherwise, yes, it's just a color, and I should really get over myself. :) Doesn't help most pink stuff is hipster shit. XD Get me a pink Starcraft 2 shirt!

Oh yeah, it's definitely social conditions. It's the same with a lot of "gender specific" things. Like dresses or long hair. Why are these things considered feminine? There's nothing about them that indicates that their feminine beyond what we've be conditioned to think.

And sure, I totally think you could switch the colors around and after a couple of generations blue would be considered "girly".

There are a lot of things that we're conditioned to feel when we view certain things. While some cultures see white as a "pure" color associated with goodness, others think of death when they see it. Red be the color of love or the color of hate. Purple used to symbolize royalty while today it doesn't (at least not in the mind of the common person). And that's just colors. Having alot of body weight isn't currently seen as being that attractive, but go back a couple centuries and being "fat" was seen as attractive or a symbol of status (some cultures still see it like this). I mean you have to be successful to be able to eat that much food regularly, right? We're programed so much to associate certain things with specific ideas, we probably don't even realize we do it so often.

Colour preference isn't necessarily as subjective as you think it is. Colour selection is a real science.

Because of this, I have always found the notion of a "favourite colour" to be a bit daft. Every colour works well depending on the situation or purpose. Even two swatches of the same colour can look drastically different depending on what colours they are placed next to. Even worse than picking strict favourites, in my opinion, is to universally declare a colour to be "ugly"; I could show you countless uses of pink in design that work better than any other colour would in that particular design.

Anyway, what sort of pink are we talking about here? Hot pink? Pastel pink? Warm/Cold? A muted, muddy colour? Every single one of these variations and countless others could be accurately labelled as "pink". Do you consider everything on the spectrum between blue-purple and red to be "ugly" or is it just one particular shade?

To me, disliking a colour is as bizarre and pointless as disliking a single note on a piano.

I didn't really wear pink until I watched Red vs Blue and my friends gave me the nickname Donut. Technically I still don't. I wear lightish red.

But, really, it's a color companies make cute things in, so we buy it. It's really just a color.

lol, some people are unaware of the brand. My bad. Like, Juicy Couture has their brand and people might think that they think their ass is juicy.
