What is so bad about 4chan?

Well it hosts /b/, and everyone's of the opinion that /b/ is some kind of hive mind sadist with infinite spite and spends every waking hour working towards its abhorrent goals.

It's actually not that bad any more. Most troll threads are ignored, not even so much as a "Not your personal army" picture, plus CP's not a huge problem anymore since there's another chan to host that stuff. The likes of Jess Slaughter and that MissCarmen are the only things recently that were worth a damn, but Carmen was to be expected given what she was doing and the same applies to Slaughter. In fact, the only reason 4chan is mentioned when Slaughter comes up is because youtube commenters don't have the attention span to get personal details like 4chan do.

Honestly, I'd say that xbox live and youtube are far worse places. Sure, XBL's calmed down so that most people don't even turn their mics on and play in silence, but when it gets nasty it's far worse than /b/.

Worst I've seen this week are a few gore threads, and several porn threads, mostly traps and chubby. The rest are all random. "Your post number decides what sort of nazi you ressurect", "Look left. That is your weapon in the zombie apocalypse".

Imagine, if you will, that there was a city in a sewer into which all of the horrible-ness of the internet slowly drained. A horrible place made mostly of human waste and filth, ruled by few, if any, laws. In this strange stew many things are born, most bad, some good, a few even great. But let me reiterate my first point, most bad, and a fair amount even horrible.

You could, if you so chose, go there in search of the good or great things, but the truth is that most of the good things leave 4chan, and flow about the internet anyways... so the only real reason to go there is that you want to wallow in the filth in which these things are born, and help give shape to them.

Personally, I would recommend against it, but to each their own.

That is the kind of thing that overruns 4chan. If you don't want to be immersed in that kind of thing, avoid 4chan at all costs.

I call that honesty. You strip away all the bullshit (name, post count, avatar, signature (-big mike), etc) and people actually do become exactly what they are. Its beautiful and disgusting at the same time. The fact a good amount of people just hide behind anonymity (the same way they hide behind names, post counts, avatars, signatures (-big mike), etc) is a little disappointing, but its to be expected. People are shit. (byc) I'm shit, you're shit, everyone is shit. If you're smugly agreeing, you're double shit. They think exploiting blatant, occasionally intentional "flaws" in a system makes them smart. When in fact they're just cancerous trash, clogging up the giant toilet that is our culture.

The fact one could report you and moderators would likely react strongly is something blessedly absent from 4chan. Most the people around here are afraid of being honest for any number of reasons. Their "reputation" (spoiler: barely anyone will remember you), moderator wrath, etc. A tour of 4chan should be required of everyone. The people who can't handle it's basic truths stay, the rest are enriched by the experience.

Also, desensitization is only a bad thing when it causes you to ignore reality.

It's just a website, most people who say it's evil just don't care for its content. It's mainly a porn website from what I've heard, and while I've personally never been there, I do know people who have. From what I've heard /b/ is the real problem, and is most likely what people avoid (although apparently the other sections aren't much better).

In the end it's your choice, seeing as there aren't any viruses (if certain sources are to be trusted that is).

Yeah I don't like their mob mentality either to be honest. This whole "we are legion" bullshit...you're not. You're at home or college tapping smarmy remarks into a keyboard and it would only take a normal sized jug of water thrown onto the PC to stop your superiority complex dead in it's tracks.

I think I recall when they rigged a Pizza Hut voting system to make the branches focus on pasta instead of pizza for a limited time. That was annoying as hell. But they did bring hell upon the cow who dumped a cat in a bit, as animal cruelty in any sense is fundamentally wrong.

So they have their moments but overall it does stink of the childish with some of their more vulgar antics really

4chan is one of those places where people are completely anonymous and can do whatever they want. Anything you have against /b/ should be pointed at human nature in general.

/b/ mainly. Although child porn is not allowed lolicon is still allowed and so are images of gruesome violence. However not all of 4 chan is bad, there exists a gleaming beacon of hope in the darkness. And it is known as /tg/.

/ck/ isn't bad either, I've learned to make quite a bit of food from there. Random has a lot of crap, but there are some good stuff that pop up every now and then. It's an acquired taste really: You have to ignore the crap, and only then is it good, though acquiring the taste isn't very pleasant and not to be recommended unless you really really like memes (like me).

The "ruining of peoples lives" bit usually comes from people going there and posting screenshots from their Facebook account talking crap about their friends etc. and don't get rid of enough information in the image so they go after whoever posted the image instead of the intended target. Or, the stuff in the image is bad enough to get people angry. Either it's your own fault, or one of your friends' fault. Not defending them, but a large portion of the blame usually rests with someone else as well.

I'm sick of seeing people running down 4chan and making them seem like the bad guys, I see them as a group of like minded people who provide a free service, the stay on the internet as a constant reminder that you CAN AND WILL be held responsible for what you say on the internet, it's cold, it's remorseless and it is random, a collective vigilante hive mind, cleaning up gutters of the internet, their own base being just as vile as the people they sabotage, a place that repulses the weak and the strong moral-less trolls are left over to patrol the internet for these people, people that shouldn't be allowed to roam the internet proclaiming themselves as better, they are the internet's dark knight, without morales, without care, without regard, no law, no code, we are anonymous, we are legion, we never forgive, we never forget. Also...they share porn...ALOT of porn, not all CP like some seem to be suggesting, in fact in all the time i've know and surfed 4chan, CP is one of the few things that you will get the Ban Hammer for posting.

4chan is fine. Certain boards on 4chan aren't for everyone. I don't like the board entirely dedicated to anime porn for example.

Nothing is wrong with 4chan. People that are offended or shocked by the site are either new to the internet, have thin skin, or are exaggerating. The occasional good thing to pass out of 4chan is usually ruined by a sea of unfunny demotivational posters and emulation that unfunny people parrot off for years afterwards.
