What is Sony's Problem?

I just want to know if anyone is more informed than me or knows what the heck is going on.

Sony currently not only has the lowest selling handheld, but home platforms. They also have the most expensive of each. 400 dollars for a PS3, and 160 for a PSP. DS beats the PSP evey month, and the Wii and 360 outsell the PS3 every month. They haven't dropped their prices ever.

Now, I want a PS3, but for 400 dollars, I'll just stick to my 360. It may be because I'm cheap, but I think that's crazy. I want to play Resistance, and I want to play LittleBigPlanet, but I just heard that Sony denied planning a price drop. It's not like they're selling a lot, because they're selling the least amount of consoles.

It may just be a little rant, but can someone please tell me what's going on or why they won't lower prices?

The reason why they aren't dropping prices is because they're losing money by selling them at $400 already. Blue-ray is fricken expensive.

They dropped the Ps3's price twice already, in 2007 and just before Metal Gear Solid 4 came out, and they have one planned for March. And they outsold the 360 worldwide for about half a year.
Actually, there have been 5 price jobs so the march would have been a sixth. Two for 2007, One for MGS4, The 40g droped to 400$ afterwards, and the EU 80g+MGS4 droped to 400$ if a gaming site is to be believed.

only in north america, every where else the ps3 has sold more than the 360, for most of the year in japan the ps3 outsold the 360 by a margin of at least 2:1 if not more

Well, it's easy to say "the lowest selling handheld" when there are only 2 viable options out there. It isn't selling as much as the DS, but it has sold enough to be a viable platform to develop for.

But then you aren't counting competitors that bombed, such as the N-Gage, the Gizmondo, the GP2X...well, you see my point.

Still, 2:1 still isn't much when you consider that PS2 was outselling Xbox at 30:1 a few years ago.

EDIT: in Japan

Also, I think the PSP is doing very well, when you consider Nintendo have been at it for over twenty years.

And the ps2 is still alive, currently Sony has 2 consoles up just so you know+a handheld.

Actually recently the 360 has had it's biggest boost in Japan recently and is outselling the PS3.

I don't know where you got the idea that it's just North America where the 360 outsold the PS3.

I'm in Europe and the 360 outsells the PS3 by tonnes, so out of the the major markets in the world all of them sell more 360's than the PS3.

That's what i thought too, but I don't have the figures in front of me, so I wasn't gonna argue.

The boosts come with JRPG releases. Tales of Vesperia contributed to the 360 outselling both the Wii and the PS3 for a couple weeks till it petered out. I'm assuming the same thing to happen with the next Star Ocean.

My understanding was that it was outselling the PS3, yes, but marginally. Some countries like Italy are selling the thing like hotcakes, while some, like Finland where I live in, have more PS3 buyers.

Well, they have the most expensive and least selling in North America at least, and since I live here in the states I don't really give a shit about how well it's selling in other countries.

Most expensive + least selling + cheap bastards like me won't cough up enough change to buy one = FAIL in my eyes and I think someone at Sony needs to wise up and do something incredible.

Sony spent all their money they made from the PS2 on the PS3 and they don't seem to making much profit as expected.

the problem with it is price of manufactuaring. look at the ps3 and psp both have expensive features Blu-Ray and all those media port thingys (PS3) and the psp has that really nice screen. now they cant sell either of those things cheaply while still making a product hell they were loosing money on the ps3 when they first released it.

That ended at least a month ago. It was a temporary boost.
MGS series is the workhorse of the year, it pretty much carried the console for six months beating the 360. Now its back hurts and its taking a stop while 09 rolls around with exclusives popping out the crevices.

If there was no blu-ray drive in the ps3 then the ps3 would still cost more by about 60$ more then the elite but the elite would cost more after a year and keep growing in cost.

Last gen: Big black Xbox doesn't sell well even though it's more powerful. Small sleak PS2 sells by the boatload and gets most of the exclusives. Gamecube sells okay, overlooked by a lot of the mainstream.

This gen: Big black PS3 doesn't sell well even tough it's more powerful (But slower), Small sleak Xbox 360 sells really well and has most of the exclusives. Wii outsells everything thanks to casual market, Nintendo get rich by selling plastic and minigames.

Then you obviously are agreaved by the lack of decent games outside of about 3 titles on your Wii.... after all, were your argument to be coherent you would have to own one as the 360 costs more...

Good Question..

I'd love to think it's the silence before the storm, as some say, that 2009 will the year of the ps3 - whatever that means - but meh...

I have a ps3... it's alright

not sure Sony has a problem, haven't seen the figures but i'm guessing they are doing alright, despite the fact that the "recession" is coming and all.. One would think that home entertainment would be the first to go.
