What is the appeal (if any) of parties to you?

Well, I am a pretty socially awkward person so unless alcohol is involved, I ussualy only like parties that involve friends.

So basically parties are fun for me if I at least am friends with a couple people.

Me and a few friends were discussing this, and I decided to ask the forum. I was trying to figure out why parties seem so appealing to some people, while others think they're overrated. So what I want to ask is, what is the the point of parties to you? And what kind of parties do you like to go to?
House parties= Copious amounts of cheap booze, sometimes cheap entertainment, maybe a random hookup, but mostly cheap booze.

Parties w/out booze= *looks at watch* oh, wow, is it that time already? I better go, I might miss Chris Ferguson.

Parties as a PC term for "rave"= wtf? 3 am already? No way! Agh! This is the last set! Is there an afterparty? wtf? Where did my ride go? Anyone seen a guy with neon green hair carrying a blue plush poodle? No? It was orange? Are you sure? Looked blue to me. Is this my shirt?

Parties are of great use because they allow the common person to join a group, that is able to effect change in the government, while one voice is weak, joining your voice with others allows you to be part of an influencing element of your own governing. The real problem is that with only a two party system the choices are highly limited and you are forced into a side on each argument in which you might not agree with.

Wait.. you meant the other type of party, didn't you..
I'm a little surprised it took this long for that joke to get posted (unless I missed it or something).

That's the kind of parties I always wanted to go to at least once. Just too see if they really are that crazy in real life. I'm just too terrified of a bunch of strangers on e to ever actually try going to one.

The strangest moment for me was randomly bumping into a hall-mate (and friend/study partner) from my freshman dorms who was dressed in black a spiked leather t-top and hot pants and was leading a giant bald guy at least twice his size and with twice as many spikes on his outfit around the dance-floor on a leash. Most surreal experience ever.
Everyone should do it at least once. And don't fear the rolling ones. They are easily impressed. And easily distracted.

It's experiences like that, that make me want to try it. People always have stories that sound like the kind of thing you can never make up, and will never be able to forget. XD

its fun to socialize and pick up girls, not to mention all the crazy shit that happens. It's just another way to socialize and its easier when a bit tipsy.

I play Pool, Video Games, and get drunk with friends. There's also an extremely slim chance that I will meet a chick and do the horizontal Mambo... erm... so far that probability is 0% based on the sample observations.

Sometimes it's just fun to go bonkers with a bunch of friends. That and meeting new people can be fun.

LAN parties where everyone bring a 6-pack of energy drinks and see who has the fastest hand and eye? Bring it on!

"Regular" parties where everyone bring a 6-pack of Vodka, get shitfaced, do something stupid and wake up in a stranger's house the next morning with amnesia? Meh, not really my thing.

Gives me a chance to be a big queen and score drunken sex on a random person's lawn <.<

Well that only happened once o.o Then I got done in for trespassing.

I've grown up a bit since those heady days of high school n.n Buckled down ... got a decent job, I'm still studying so one day I can hopefully be a lecturer in a somewhat half decent university.

Personally I think it's lame how people can actually think being an introvert gives them some level of maturity or good grace. Its a load of fucking bullshit. Psychologically most introverts lack the ability to make short, easy work of socio-empathic connections ... which in otherwords makes them clueless around people.

Learning to be merry amongst others and deal with possible conflicts that may arise in social settings such as parties are a quintessential lifeskill. At parties you see people at their best (or possibly 'happiest' should be the proper term) and at their worst. Exposure to these makes a person better able to handle others, not worse.

I also dislike how people treat introversion (minus in some anomalous psychological cases) as something innate to their character ... no it's not, its just that you haven't made enough time for people and likewise they aren't likely to make time for you.

It's fun when I have a few drinks in me and I'm not so hesitant to strike up random convos, but going out to parties usually ends up to be an interesting night. They make good stories if I can remember it all clearly.

They don't appeal to me, they're noisy and the music usually sucks and I don't feel like I belong there.

Eh, me and my best friend do whole-night gaming sessions and watch animé, films, etc, and jut call them "parties". Not really parties, but I enjoy them far more than any real "party".
I dislike being with a large group of people at once, especially when I do not know some of them... makes me quite uncomfortable...
If they are all friends, I can tolerate being with a slightly larger group of people... although I won't talk much...

I don't understand. This is like asking if people enjoy sex, and if not, why not. A party is an event designed to give people a positive, enjoyable social experience; there can be such a thing as a bad party, and there can be such a thing as a person who never goes to parties and looks down on people who do in order to feel better about themselves, but I don't see who's disliking parties as a concept.
