What is the appeal (if any) of parties to you?

To catch up with my friends.

Reading over this thread it seems that many of you guys seem a little too cynical. Not all parties involve a bunch of dickheads getting together to drink excessively and fight. Granted, lots do..

I don't go out excessively. On the odd occasions when I do it's with my close friends and I enjoy myself.

How do I feel about spending the night cooped up with a bunch of drunk people I hardly if at all know?

Stranger danger, stranger danger! Don't make me blow my rape whistle!

Kidding. I love it. It's an excuse to cut loose, lose a little stress. Destroy a house or two. Maybe if your lucky burn down the bathroom.

*Boring background story no one would read anyway goes here.*

Me and a few friends were discussing this, and I decided to ask the forum. I was trying to figure out why parties seem so appealing to some people, while others think they're overrated. So what I want to ask is, what is the the point of parties to you? And what kind of parties do you like to go to?

Edit: I forgot to mention my own opinion on it. Anyway, I like them once it gets way later and some of the people leave. There's just more, random events during that part of it, and that's pretty much the only reason I hang around in the first place.
Not to stereotype anyone, but a lot of people like to just go out, hang with friends, drink, and go wild. I know that might sound a bit pointless, but there are so many people who do this every day or many times a week simply to get drunk. :/

Or there's an ulterior motive involved, like sex, or handling pain, or something else. Very few people do it just to have a good time, usually there's a hidden reason. I learned this because I have been to a few parties with party esque friends, and learned pretty much all the ropes and at the end of the day, it's all about something hidden. D:

Personally, I'd rather have normal parties, where friends just hang out. Eat, watch a movie, play games or do silly karaoke! xD
Yeah, the normal ones are pretty much the only kind I ever go to. It's always more fun with just a small group of people I actually have fun being around, and eventually realizing it's already 10am the next day, and stepping out into what feels like the Brave New World. XD

But I know exactly what you mean about the other kinds. I went to maybe 2 like that a long time ago, and I was always miserable when I did. The one thing I'll never forget from those is the time my friend just vanished for hours, and then way later someone went to the bathroom, and came back screaming about how they thought he died, because he was passed out naked on the toilet because he was so sick.

It's like the pub, without the music you can't hear people over.

It's like the restaurant, with more friends and cheaper food.

What is there not to love?

Because I get to have fun with my friends... Yeah, it's really not that complicated.

being drunk gives you a sense of euphoria, it can strip away almost any social inhabitions you have, it will instant give you a common interest with all other drunk people there and can be the founding of a life long friendship. Being drunk makes boring tasks more fun, it's an excuse to act silly and lark around.
being drunk may give you a sense of euphoria but people who are drunk often smell, vomit, start fights, do stupid things (push people into fires or something equeally dumb), or faint. you ruin party's for people that can have fun and make friends without Alcohol when they just hang out with friends.
That depends entirely on who you hang out with. None of my friends start fights or anything when we're drunk, nor can I say we've pushed anyone into any fires lately.

Before this thread I never realised how many escapist members appear to be such massive social rejects. It almost makes me feel bad to be a part of it. Parties are a fun way to hang out with friends and socialise.

if you define parties as "social contact amongst a significant group of people" then a D&D meet would constitute a party with that definition. Yet a D&D meet isn't people's traditional idea of a "party", probably even to the D&D players. What I'm saying is that this discussion is going to mean different things to different people because of how vague the definitions are.

Personally, I don't like parties- I prefer social contact in smaller groups, where you can, you know, actually talk to people.

Because it's fun, why else would you go? (Unless it's the social obligation kind of party)

My friends.

Parties in general are extremely overrated, but as long as I have a select group (no more than 4-8 or so) of my best friends around it will be a kickass night.

They all have excellent taste in music and fantastic humor. Gogo smallfriendlyparties.

Who the hell have you seen partying?

All of my drunk friends tend to smell nice (there's always the exception) and we've not had a puker for the last 4-5 parties. Fights have never happened and the general stupidity is regulated by the "appointed sobermen" that are always present.

You've just experienced shitty parties.

Edit:

Of course, not everyone can party down by the lake every other weekend like I can i suppose. We have to be safe around water. Even the local police support us coming down to the lake because we self regulate. (I think that's the right term.)

I like hosting parties more than attending them. Mostly cause my house was made to party.. indoor pool in the summer, basement bar (stocked), pool table, poker table, dart board, etc.

I don't like the destruction that certain drunk people cause though. For that reason I like to keep the strangers to a minimum and the numbers around 20 or so.

Basically I throw my own parties because there is always too many people, and too much noise at most other parties.

House parties don't really appeal to me, unless there with a small group of friends (generally less than 10), and they're usually more gatherings than parties.

Going the bar is fun sometimes (so long as it's a bar not a club or a bar with music so loud you can't hear/talk), just to hangout, have a beer, and socialize with some people you go along with.
