For me the appeal has always been that pokemon is the perfect holiday game. You go away on holiday with your parents, you start a new game and then on the plane on the way back you have an unbeatable monster team. Not much of an appeal I know, but it beats meating new people

Pokemon has what I like to call "Animal Crossing Syndrome", also known as "Harvest Moon Syndrome". It's one of those games that you play and love, but you can't really explain why.

That is, until Diamond and Pearl ruined the entire franchise :p

Yes, I agree about the Syndrome, but for me, pokemon was ruined when ruby and sapphire came out.

Ruby and Sapphire were the BEST versions of the game

I'm not sure why I play them anymore. I started when Red/Blue came out, quit during gen. 3, got back into it during this gen of it, but when I got Heart Gold, I just got bored to death. I used to love Gold, but I just suddenly lost interest. I used to love the strategy of breeding them to have unnatural moves and so on, but I just feel like it's not worth the effort to finish another story mode anymore for some reason.

I just like the idea of catching exotic animals and keeping them as pets. Hell I even own 2 parrots.

The battle system to me is so so. I do like the two on two battle system. I feel it has less focus on rock paper scissors that way. But that system is underused. Sometimes I wish they'd do more changes to the battle system. The sequels feel to much the same, but I think they're just marketing more to new generations of kids, rather than older fans. So I doubt I'll get the next one.

For me, it's nostalgia. That's really it. Pokemon Yellow was my first game ever and I used to watch the show and the movies. I loved Pokemon growing up and I just remember the good ol' days.

It's fun, plain and simple...

And my desire to catch wild animals train them and force them to fight one another for money...

CHINPOKOMON!

And I dunno, I picked up HeartGold today, and the game just has an addictive quality hidden inside.

I like to think it's because they know how to do turn-based combat right: instead of having set character that you have to play with, there are hundreds of choices for you to choose from, each with their own strengths, weaknesses, and movesets. Plus, outside of battling, the worlds that the creators think up are very fun to explore.

Honestly though, it's probably got a lot more to do with nostalgia for most of us, myself included.

One reason is because the fact that Game Freak and the pokemon company have presented their product in the same formula time and time again. and it never ceases to lure you in like a spiral..errr.. Mario game. lol they are all the same down to the core. with a minor upgrade/spit shine job with a little extra glossiness each time its served to us. or it may just nostalgia and you're just crazier. lol

what it there was a pokemon game made like one of the "Tactics" game? (like Final fantasy tactics)

your pokemon move across the field as you do too. so you need to get close enough to throw a pokeball, customizing equipment like clothes/gear to help move across the terrain. and instead of following the strict silent hero story to be champion, maybe switch it with side quests that include being like a bounty hunter to Region A territory and bringing down Regional Gang B? or don't take those quests and let the pokemon gangs get away with stuff, or join their ranks and overtake? I mean you can still aim to be a pokemon champion... there should just be be more than one way to get there. or maybe even taking over a gym and challenging players online to it.

Hell they've got a great start with this with the ranger series. one thing i'd like to see again is a pokemon tgc game for the ds. Who remembers playing the card game on your GB color? good times! they've never pulled that formula again.. am i the only one who enjoyed that game?

Keep Playing: I have no desire to stop.

Keep Buying the New Games: I'm getting white, but only for the legendary. I haven't any nostalgia for these new games, so its hard to like them. Maybe after the 10th generation I'll like the 5th generation, but the new games don't hook me like the old ones do.

All the fun of illegal dog fighting without all the mess and legalities of regular dog fights. Or maybe I'm just a sadist who likes sending others to their doom.

Isn't it obvious. You want to be the best, like no one ever was. To catch them is your real test, to train them is your cause. You will travel across the land, searching far and wide. Teach Pokemon to understand the power that's inside.
gotta' catch em all.
It's you and them. You know its your destiny. They're you're best friend in a world you must defend. Your hearts so true. Your courage will pull you through. They teach you and you teach them.
Gotta catch em all.
Gotta Catch Em All.
Every challenge along the way, with courage you can face. You will battle everyday to claim your rightful place. Take them with you, time is right. There's no better team. Arm in arm you'll win the fight. It's always been your dream.
GOtta CAtch EM ALl!
It's you and them. You know its your destiny. They're you're best friend in a world you must defend. Your hearts so true. Your courage will pull you through. They teach you and you teach them.

ITS A TRAP!!

Yea, just as everybody has mentioned, its just an awesome game. Think about it, you can play it for ages, you can play it a little at a time, you can play it just about anywhere. Also, the replayability is just top notch.

My first GameBoyColour game was Pokemon Yellow version and it was revolutionary. Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, Pikachu... ALL IN ONE GAME *head explodes*

There are alot of characteristics that makes the pokemon games both addictive and fun. However, I just dont find pokemon THAT great anymore... I just feel that they have killed it by trying to create more and more pokemon, now some of them just look plain stupid.
