And will someone PLEASE mention Team ICO already?! It's been what 40 posts and NO-ONE mentions the creators of the crown jewels of the game-as-art debate? I would but I've never played either game.
Even more surprising is the lack of mention of Nin-ten-DO'H!... I mean, SOMEONE has to put them in the best/worst (both equally fair) category. I refuse to... but, seriously people! Nintendo, for chrissake, has been around since 1889, making hanafuda cards and love hotels!
Never played a team Ico game (glad they're porting them to current gen consoles), but I've played plenty of Nintendo. And they fell right in my worst developer/publisher slot. Not because they make bad games, but they make the SAME game. I love zelda. I adore metroid. But they hide the good stuff from 3rd party developers, and they never seem to innovate. Motion controls was huge, but I want new software that goes beyond "Now you use the Wiimote like a baseball bat!"

As for Portal, it was a major step in videogame story telling. Without a single cut scene, or even so much as a reference to some kind of back-story, it manages to transport us into the virtual space of its plot, allowing us to deduce our own way through its elaborate puzzles and come to our own conclusions about the conspiracy that is amiss. In Portal, we actually act out the story as part of the gameplay. Also, it seamlessly delves the player into the reality of its own world.
The marketing jargon and general back of the box corporate crap in this one is making me queasy. If you're not being paid advertising by Valve you're getting screwed. Seriously it sounds like you're trying to convince yourself more than us.
It's not marketing jargon. I've extensively studied narrative devices back in GCE Literature, and I apply it where I feel like it. Care to point out any discrepancy in my interpretation?

If not... Shoo! Shoo! Troll! Get back back under your bridge!

If we're talking about quality, some of the best would include Activision, Bethesda Softworks, EA and Valve. They've got the big bucks to come through and make quality games which, most of the time, they do. Of course the production quality isn't enough to make most people forgive the epic douchebags who are Ben "Microtransactions" Cousins and Bobby "Let's Put Cutscenes onto DVDs and Sell Them" Kotick.

Bad companies: City Interactive. Ever seen their $10 budget ripoffs of Medal of Honor and COD4?

Best is Blizzard. They make enough money to buy a moon with WoW yet they still care about about Starcraft and Diablo series even if what they earn on them is just a pocketchange compared to WoW.

Worst is Bethesda. They release game with poor game mechanics, terrible animations, bad story, etc + mod tools and let the fanbase to do the work for them, and because they do, they just keep same flaws in next game. (see Oblivion->Fallout 3)

Also I would say that Valve is little overated, they are still great, I just would not say that they are one of the best.

Ofcourse this just my exaggerated opinion, there is no such thing as best or worst game company, it depends on what you like and what you hate about games.

Best- Valve.

Worst- EA.

Their treatment of fans is the deciding factor. Valve's driving force seem to be the genuine desire to make and maintain great games. While EA only care about money and don't care about their fans.

I don't like Ninja Theory because all they seem to do is copy gameplay from other games, most are like god of war
Also Activision get others to do the work for them

Best: Valve
Worst: Zynga and whoever made APB (seriously, how can a MMO have such a short life span?)

Oh man i have so many.

Best: From Software, SNK Playmore, Blizzard, Capcom. but my absolute fav is Square Enix.

Worst: Valve, Bioware, Bethesda and EA.
Troll Detector MAY be glitching at this point.

BEST: Valve. Their support is fantastic, they did DRM correctly (IMO), They make some revolutionary games and they LOVE to help out the small fries.

WORST: Activision by far. "We want to take the fun out of making games" which apparently means more productivity....brilliant. They exploit markets and budding developers. They break publishing laws frequently and they support you with sod all...unless its for a price. Call Of Duty being one of the reasons for XBOX live having an increased subscription price (And yes it HAS been mentioned frequently by Activision). They have NO love for sales. Oh and Cod was a fish a few years ago :(
Am a troll how? I dont like valves games or there practice on saying there will be episode 3 yet its been how long? I dont like there practice in the slightest. Yes lets not bring out Half life 3 but instead! work on a new dota no one was asking for!

Bioware the same thing. There dumbing down there games and streamlining them and taking out the depth of them mainly with mass effect. There games are overated and the paragon and renegade system is broken. The system will only benefit you if your completly good or bad it dosent appercaite a balanced and logical veiw on life in the game.

Bethesda. There games have been great but the bugs are just ludacris. The graphics and presentation are bleh. Mainly Oblivion and fallout. everything feels so robotic and stiff nothing feels naturaul or real in the world of fallout. There falling from a high point they were once at. But when you have the feeling that morrowind had how many years ago in new game like fallout thats sad. Plus fallout was so buggy i could never finish the game. The games bug's broke itself!.

Am tired of defending myself so i wont bothewr with ea.

If i was really trolling i'd have all these bad developers in the best.

what do you have against From Software? SNK? I love how i must defend myself from speaking what i think and everyone thinking am a troll.

Best: Naughty Dog, they made the first game I ever played, then they made the greatness that was Jak and Daxter, and then they made Uncharted.
Insomniac Games as they made the original Spyro series, then they made Ratchet and Clank, then they made my first ever PS3 game, Resistance.
And finally Pandemic Studios, seriously they made Star Wars: battlefront, Destroy All Humans! and best of all Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction. 'Nuff said.

Worst: Bethesda after Morrowind. Oblivion had so much less than Morrowind, and Fallout 3 screwed up the fallout series in many ways. Skyrim better be good! Plus Bethesda seem to have no connection to their fans. Seriously Josh Sawyer answers so many questions he's asked, even ones that question things he did in New Vegas. Did Bethesda ever explain the things they did in Fallout 3?

It's hard to say what the worst is. I assume the worst game company would be a company I've never heard of.

Rockstar are the best by far in my personal opinion. Bearing in mind I've only played GTA and Red Dead, they've done everything I wanted and then some. Red Dead espically, with a well made protaganist and a fantastic story. That and the most awesome DLC I've played recently. I'm looking forward to La Noir, should be good considering the time period and the character.
Yeah Rockstar are great - quality is assured from them. Although LA Noire isn't being made by Rockstar.

Best would be between Bioware or Valve.

Worst would be either obsidian for ruining great franchises and making very glitchy sequels or Infinity Ward for making overpriced map packs and not patching their problems.
