Either Trials HD by RedLynx, or Minecraft by Mojang.

I used to love Trials, and Minecraft is just fantastic to play, especially with mods.

I totally forgot World of Goo was indie, 'cause it's just so damn good!

Seriously, Aksor is right, if you don't know what you're missing- drop that sandwich, put your homework away, and go seek out World of Goo. The soundtrack is brilliant, the gameplay is inventive and engaging, and the story is... weird. But in a good way.

I actually do love M&B (provided I'm not sucking majorly), but this makes me want to ask: "When does a company become NOT indie?" Because unless I'm mistaken they're pretty successful at this rate.

Also I've played a lot of indie games, hard to say which is best... I did like Plants vs. Zombies though.
you question the 'indieness' of M&B, but then you pick plants versus zombies as your favorite indiegame, a game from a company that's recently been bought for, what was it? 600 mil or so

And to zerochan above me: thanks for agreeing with me :) go play world of goo people

Well, I would have appreciated an answer rather than a retaliation, but yeah, PvZ is part of a pretty successful group.

But can anyone answer me?

Narbulacar Drop.(Don't know if spelled right). What can I say? It started Portal.

I must admit I play and love Minecraft, the Mount and Blade series and Amnesia*, but Revenge of the Titans is well worth mentioning.

* - Since I am a wuss, I cannot play more than 10 minutes of Amnesia in one sitting.

Cave Story, by Pixel.

I like the cleaned-up one on the WiiWare better though. I have zero attachment and an ever-growing ambivalence towards retro-pixellated 8-bit crap. That includes chiptunes.

Amnesia by Frictional Games. I'm a big fan of the survival horror genre, so I'm glad a recent horror game managed to scare me.

Cave Story, easily, mostly because of the sheer scale of it and of course the emotion packed into such a simple story and the SOUNDTRACK. Man, that soundtrack is awesome.

Best Indie game not mentioned yet: And Yet it Moves. Just plain fun gravity manipulating platformer with a pretty cool art style.

Does Portal count? If not, then the first Mafia. Both are pretty much triple A titles coming from independent devs.

When the game development is funded by a big company it most certainly does NOT count as indie. Indie means more than a studio not being owned by the big companies, they don't depend on them either.

As a simple guideline, anything triple_A cannot be indie. Indies don't have the money.

Yeah, well aware, but could swear both titles were listed as indie somewhere, to my great surprise. Fair enough then, at a glance, I suppose Panzer General is one of the rare indie games I've played/enjoyed. Really should work on correcting that I suppose :)

I don't expect many people to share the sentiment, but I really liked The Path by Tale of Tales. Well, it's more a "favourite" than a "best," really. There's not much actual game in there but it's a title that, while at times frustrating, really grabbed me with its atmosphere - thanks in no small part to the soundtrack by Kris Force and Jarboe.

The Void. Not the 'best' Indie game I've ever played, but by far my favourite.
Made by Ice-Lodge Lodge, a team of 8 Russians who've only made 3 games to date. Sure it has some rough edges, but it has a fantastic atmosphere and aesthetic, and the gameplay is unlike anything I've ever experienced.
This game is beautiful. Although I've yet to learn how to manage my resources well enough to survive past the initial section.

Hmm, hard to decide. It's a tie between And Yet It Moves, World of Goo, Braid and The Path.

Very true. The atmosphere in connection with the music is really great. That game was a really worthwhile experience.
