What is the best RPG on the PS1?

Suikoden II without a doubt. LUCA BLIGHT DAMMIT. Although to be fair, it had an awful lot of text mistakes and tended to abuse the exclamation point.

Definitely Final Fantasy Tactics

For those of you saying Chrono Trigger, Chrono Trigger was never on PS1. You're talking about Chrono Cross; Chrono Trigger is far, far superior to Chrono Cross.

Chrono Trigger got ported to the PS1. It had shiny new anime cutscenes when it did.

My favorite was...I think it goes Final Fantasy VIII, Final Fantasy VII, Suikoden AND Suikoden II. I'm cheating as saying those two are one game. You needed to play the first one to TRULY enjoy the second, especially if you had save data.

Looks like I need to appologize... I don't know how I forgot about FFChronicles, especially considering I own it. Either way, I will always think of the SNES when I think of Chrono Trigger or FFVI (FFIV if you're looking at the American release).

All of this talk of Chrono Trigger and FFVI is making me want to plug in my PS1 that I saved specifically for those three games.

For my money, it's Suikoden II. Hundreds (literally) of well-defined characters, and a mature story. I love it to death.

It's also probably the best game I've ever played.

ASk people what one of the best games ever was, and theres a good chance you'll hear FF7, but ask people what the best game on Ps1 was, and it hardly even gets an honorable mention.

For me, Im going to go with FFTactics, though I did enjoy the War of the Lions version better. FF7 is in my top five.

FF7. Many people initially bought their PS1 because of this game. They had to crank out so many copies on release day that many people couldn't get all 3 cds to work (and either had to return it, buy a new copy, or trade workable disks with friends.) But the game was so good and ground-breaking that no one either remembers or cares about this. I believe it was the best.

Here are some runner up titles that were very good:

WildArms2 was huge. So was BoF3 and 4. And Grandia.

Valkyrie Profile was epic, though it was insanely hard to find at the time (only so many copies were made and all that).

Vagrant Story was another epic PS1 game.


And there are some titles that were not mentioned much (or at all) yet.

The second greats for the PS1 is Breath of fire IV.

Crono Cross- Awesome soundtrack and enjoyable story and world.
Final Fantasy VII (7) - Good story, world, and game play.
Final Fantasy IX (9) Good musical score, world, characters, story, length of play, mechanics, and a lot of other stuff.

Im gonna say Legend of Dragoon, Parasite Eve, or Chrono Cross. I "enjoyed" FF 7, I just think the 3 games I mentioned are MORE enjoyable.

I haven't played, but my friend said that Legend of the Dragoon is pretty fucking awsome. That and I've heard good things about this obscure little game called Final Fantasy 7

Coming into this thread I was thinking Final Fantasy Tactics all the way, then as I read other posts mentioning Star Ocean 2, also started to think about all the elements of Final Fantasy IX that I enjoyed, and finally remembering my 214 hour playtime in Dragon Warrior VII where I still had a dozen or so jobs to unlock. But still I have to stick with Tactics; one of the first games I got for my Playstation and one of the last I was playing on my PS2. You'd probably find well over 20 save files across the memory cards in my house between my brothers and I.
