I want to know what you think is the darkest game you've played? I recently played through 'the path' which is an extremly strange game but I found it interesting and I liked its darkness a lot. Another game I found did this well was 'Alice' by American McGee, which I played when I was younger. I was really looking forward to 'Oz' which got canceled.

I think what I liked about these games is the way they take something childish (Alice in wonderland, little red riding hood) and twist it as far as it will go. Reverting parts of it back to their darkest meanings.

Games like bioshock or Dead Space have a darkness to them but its not the same in my opinion.

Any other games that people found like these or any other opinions?

Dark as in, moody? Because the "Darkest" game anyone's ever played is Doom 3. Atmospheric, "Harvester" was pretty strange.

Bio Shock.
It was one of the few games that really scared me and gave me that "Dark" feeling.

The Darkness was extremely downbeat and depressing at points.

It was almost too nihilistic and sad to play for long bouts.

I'd say...
World of Warcraft. I went on a PvP server first time I played it.
And know what? That scared me. Outright bloody scared me.
I now happily play on an RP realm, far away from those lunatics.

Ok I guess I should clarify that by dark I ment atmospheric. Doom 3 is a game I liked but it was more scary than dark I found.

Fallout. The cheeriness of the 60's aesthetic that came before only serves to highlight how soul crushingly futile it all is.
Thats very true. Although it lacked the truly dark atmosphere due to the other things going on in the game I found

I only played the beginning of the origional condemmed because I couldnt get the hang of the combat system and finding someone run out from behind a pillar with a bat scared me to the point that I emptied every bullet in my gun and hid in the corner.

It still didnt have the twist that Alice and the path did though. Is it just me or have others played these games and found it?

I can't decide between Baroque and American McGee's Alice. Both are dark, and each has their own aspects that make them a complete mindfuck.

Both silent Hill and S.T.A.L.K.E.R I havnt played. I never owned a playstation at the time of the origional and S.T.A.L.K.E.R I lacked the computer for at the time. Are these games still worth playing now?

BTW I would recomend Alice to anyone that gets the chance to play it

Agreed, it has one of the most intense moments in any game ever. I really liked that game.

OT: Condemned
The Suffering
Manhunt

planescape torment, or tribly series.
Planescape tourment was awsome but I didnt find it dark. It was on the same sort of par as Arcanum (Best game ever). Trilby series was awsome though. So glad Yatzee made those and got the job here.

50 cent's blood on the sand. oh wait, wrong kind of dark.
that made me giggle xD

The darkest game I ever played was Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth. The only game in which the character who you play as can go insane and kill himself. I once made him do it when he wasn't holding a weapon and hound it more disturbing than when I had him do it with a shotgun. You've got to put in a LOT of effort to strangle yourself to death. Even when you do manage to beat the game, the ending is pretty depressing ... but then it IS a Lovecraft game >.>
