I'd like to ask the escapist users for their perception of certain video game communities

-facepunch
-destructoid
-gamefaqs
-neogaf
-4chan /v/ (deceased, rest in peace)
-penny arcade forums

I'm a long time GameFAQs user - never had much experience with the rest of these. GameFAQs is...OK. Nothing bad, nothing good - it depends on the board you're at, as the community seems to not be as cohesive as much as broken down between the boards. Overall it's OK, as I said.

Now, I mentioned I've not had much experience with the rest but from general experience on forums I'd say they aren't going to be much different. It's not like each website being a hive-mind on its own - each is still just a collection of people. And people can and do post across different websites, so...yeah, I don't really see them as separate or defined groups.

-Gamefaqs - used to be filled with nothing but trolls, not sure how it is now. The specific game boards were alright sometimes but the general console boards are generally just trolls. I do like that there are seperate boards for specific games.

-NeoGAF - The game board is ok, although there will be a 100 page topic talking about the fidelity of the leaves on the side of the track of a racing game. Off-topic is generally an echo chamber of uber PC crazyness. The mods are generally douches, you can and will get banned for having the "wrong" opinion on certain subjects, even with non inflammatory discussion.

I only go to Gamefaqs if I need a technical question about the game answered, like how online play is, or what features does it have, can I use a classic controller pro, etc. Otherwise no, it's a dramafest. Facepunch was a cool place to see mods or game projects people were working on, still could be, haven't visited in a while. Never bothered with Neogaf, but I think they were condoning pedophilia at one point so, yeah. Can't see myself going there. Destructoid is mostly opinion pieces disguised as news. And I've never been to 4chan or Penny Arcade forums (I find the comic unfunny from what I have seen)

Never heard of Facepunch. Never bothered with /v/, Penny Arcade or Destructoid. As for GameFAQs, it all comes down to which boards you're on. NeoGAF I don't have an account with, but do read quite often. It can be a good to read (as a football fan, I enjoy the football thread), but then some of it on the gaming side is far too fanboyish for me.

Facepunch is pretty ok, the mods take care of a lot of the little kids and trolls that come on. One of the main reasons i frequent the sight os because of their Sensationalist Headlines subforum, i see all sorts of crazy news stories there.
The only thing i dont like about it is that there are some users are very racist closed minded, not to mention a lot of them hate furries.

I hang around NeoGaf and /v/, the former being super niche and "hardcore" about a lot of things and the latter being completely unsuitable for anything but semi-ironic shitposting.

I've heard some poor things about GameFAQs and Penny Arcade never held my interest. Facepunch looks neat, but I was never into their games.

I like GameFAQs. It doesn't bullshit around. It's about videogames.
I like Penny Arcade, but I've never been to the forums.
I don't know the others.

GameFAQs is great if you wanna know how to get the Sword of Devastation or how to get past the boss of Level 3-1. For intelligent conversation... not so much.

NeoGAF is good for breaking news but it gives me meme overload.

Haven't been to Destructoid since Jim left, and I've never bothered with the forums.

Never been to the PA forums either. I still read the comic but it's really gone downhill ever since the artist started putting huge buck teeth on Gabe.

Can't be bothered with the others.

Urgh Gamefaqs. I used to go on there a lot but then I found The Escpaist. I went back there for some stuff on DA:I and I regretted it. It was just pure negativity and hate. Things like the women in DA:I not be attractive enough and how it created 'instant limp'. Yeah. Screw that place.

I... basically just use 'Scapist because there are pretty decent articles here,if a bit sensationalised at times and written as though America = World. Seriously, stop addressing everyone as "we" in a purely US based topic.

Also the community is great and as if I have the effort to spend on another forum. I'm kinda well known around here kinda sorta probably maybe... That guy who fanboys over Persona 4 every chance he gets. Yeah him.

I'm not deperate enough to even attempt to look at GameFAQs forums but I did sometimes look at /v/ because I have a spot spot for 4chan. It has quite honestly the most entertaining boards on the Internet. I prefer /a/ though, threads derail so hard it's like Daystar is everywhere at once. There are no trolls there funnily enough, it's actually the best place for anime discussion. Trolls get shut down instantly by the first post, it's rather amazing.

My favourite line to date is: "If you can still even get hard to real life 3D porn you shouldn't be allowed to post on this board"

Fuckin' lol'd

Back in around 2009 facepunch was known for banning every single user that posted.

There aren't really any decent games sites and yeah, I'm counting this one in there. They're all balls of greasy, worrying nerdery and that's coming from the Linux using, computing employed tabletop gamer.

The best out of your list is /v/. between /v/, /tg/ and Ars Technica I basically don't come here any more.

Generally neutral. As long as they aren't creating problems here, I see no reason why to denounce other forums I know little or nothing about. This has been my only forum so far so I know I'm biased.

I don't believe we're "The last bastion of intelligence on the internet." like members commonly used to but I think we're generally a good community when it comes down to it.

I wouldn't really call GameFAQs a community, but instead a group of communities, because each (social) board more or less has its own community. I've been a regular at a fairly small social board on GameFAQs for 8-10 years, but nowadays I'm more of a lurker, so I rarely have more than 10 active posts on the board. Other than that, I don't really post much on GameFAQs, save for a rare post on a couple secret boards.

The only other forum that you mentioned that I've ever even seen is /v/, which I lurk every once in a blue moon for shits and giggles, but I've only posted there a couple times

Gamefaq was always alright. Don't use it that much now.

I didn't even know that Penny Arcade had a forum (though I assumed so, being an incredibly popular site and all) and /v/ is something I make sure to specifically stay from. Never used Desctructoid, I have no idea what neogaf of Facepunch are.

NeoGaf is ok I guess, it's a good place for news and casually talking about games, but stay the hell away from serious heated discussions especially politics if your opinions go against the flow.

-destructoid
IGN forums v2.0

-gamefaqs
Helpful, but everyone is a fucking asshole about it.

-neogaf
Interesting stuff comes out of neogaf.

-4chan /v/
/v/ is just normies from Reddit now. It sort of lost its teeth. I liked what it used to be.

-penny arcade forums
I know nothing about it. I expect it to be full of people who like penny arcade.

The only other one I "frequent" is GBAtemp.
Aside from gamefaqs which I used to go on as a kid and penny arcade, they all sound terrible.
