If I had to pick one and only one, "The Man Who Planted Trees" would be it: the story of a man who changed the world by simply living his life. The visuals are stunning and the execution is flawless. Those thirty minutes created by Frederic Back changed my life in a wonderful way.

If I was given a chance to pick one series, one short film, and one feature length film...

Series: "Patlabor" -superb police slice of life tales with a heavy dose of bizarre.
Short film: "The Man Who Planted Trees" -see above
Feature length: "Tokyo Godfathers" -the story of three street people, a lost baby, and Tokyo at Christmas.

Honourable mentions: "Duck Amuck" -to see just how insane Daffy Duck can truly be
"Donald Duck in Mathmagic Land" -from back in the day when Disney knew how to educate
"The Flintstones" -an animated family sitcom before "The Simpsons" made it cool
"Ghost in the Shell" -to see what a good story can become when the animation has no boundaries
"Ludwig" -an introduction for the very young to the music of Beethoven and a mechanized egg with a violin

If we're including anime, I'm going with Death Note.

Otherwise, The Simpsons.

Ooh, that's a tough one. My personal favorites are Samurai Jack, Megas XLR, DBZ, Batman TAS, and Time Squad. They were all awesome, but if I had to choose THE best, it would probably be a tie between Batman and Samurai Jack. "WA-CHA!"

I never got how that was funny.
Me neither. who says it needs to be? episodes had good to decent plots, Felt like, and in some clearly drug inspired moments, was, Horror, and Kats, the arguable "Big Bad", was freaking awesome, to the point Im disappointed the finale doesn't feature him.

I didn't laugh, but it was awesome. also, I grew up with it. so... nostalgia.

The humor is very... backhanded, if you'll pardon the metaphor.

You know how, in Sideways, (I'll assume you've seen it, and if you haven't, shame on you! :p) there's a mixture of depressing bits with some comedy spliced in? I always felt Courage was very similar to that - in the sense that they're bombarding you with so many different themes to emit so many different emotions, you're pretty much laughing to subdue the feeling you get from the uncomfortable situations.

A great example is the computer. You know how, when the shit hit the fan, he was always taking his time to make snide, uncompromising remarks? Sure, you know that time is of the essence, but because the situation they're ('they' being Muriel and Eustace, Courage as well at times) thrust into is so disturbing, you're laughing from an uncomfortable standpoint. It makes the humor shine through, partly because the other stuff is usually so grim.

[sub][sub]Or maybe that's just me - I love this show either way.[/sub][/sub]

As much as I love Avatar: The Last Airbender, I'm going to have to pick a timeless classic.

Freakazoid [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpjXFF0zIJY&feature=related] was damn great, too. But not quite as good as Animaniacs.

I actually have to say Spongebob. Because that show had SO much adult humor, I watched one today and just laughed out loud because i forgot how funny it actually was.

The cartoon that's closest to perfection that I can think of is Avatar: The Last Airbender. It had great art, very solid writting, creative atmosphere, and is overall alot of fun to watch.

Aside from that, I have 2 favorites that are really good but not without flaws.

Pucca is charming, delightful, and has enough moments to be worth a look, but it suffers from having alot of plotholes.

Codename: Kids Next Door was reasonably creative and well-written with a decent variety of characters, but also suffers from some plotholes, and it had some characters drenched in stereotype that I somehow found disturbing.

But I think Avatar: The Last Airbender still carries the lead, though with more recent cartoons like Flapjack, and Adventure Time, there might be some competition later on.
