OT: The hardest boss I ever recall fighting was embarrassingly this:

That one boss always pissed me off partly due to the fact it seemed random when he appeared (he suspiciously never appeared when I stocked up on healing items), always destroyed me when I tried fighting him and I could never really grind in the game because my digimon would always kick the bucket before I felt ready for him. I'm sure there were harder fights but piximon was the one encounter I always remember.

Also, I haven't personally fought this but it deserves mention:

Crawmerax the invincible in Borderlands. I was the sniper and he is a major pain every time I fight him.

This goddamn ***** made me scream and break so many controllers I eventually just settled for breaking the game disc and never playing the game again.

Goddamn.

And most recently Ultraxxion HC in World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, just because I have several people on my raid team not entirely understanding of the concept "CLICK THIS BUTTON OR YOU'LL DIE!".

I don't remember which boss it was but I remember having very high level characters in Final Fantasy 12 and getting killed over 40 minutes into a boss fight several times. I know he used disease, death, some other mana draining ability, and other annoying status ailments. When I finally did beat him, I had one character alive. I had one other party member heal her (Might have been Ashh?) to full health and the other party member hit the boss as hard as possible. Both of those party members died and I finished off the boss who had only a barely visible bar of health left. Then entire time I was holding my breath and praying to Shiva, Ifrit, and all my other summons, that the monster wouldn't caste sleep or something.

That game had a lot of hard fights...

I want to say either the Grand Jewel from Legend of Dragoon, or any of the fights featured in the Tactics mod for Baldur's gate 2.

Never mangaged to win against Phantom, a secret boss in the first? Kingdom Hearts game. He'd used this special attack that would kill your teammates (couldn't ressurect them afterwards) a few seconds after casting it. You could defend against this attack by using a 'stop' spell against the big ben. But that was tricky, for you we're fighting in 3d (actual 3d for you and the boss are flying during the game), and you had to cast it on the right clock. Fighting phantom always was a race against time, and that was a difficult race for you couldn't harm it more then half of the time.

I personally found the last version of Seymour Guardo from FFX was very difficult on my first time round, however on my second time round he was far easier!

Final boss in Metroid Prime is ballsac hard.

It'd be bad enough without the constant filter switching.
I spent ages against this boss before I figured out the trick. The filter switching was cool but there were times it just disappeared from my three special visors. I couldn't see the thing. I gave up and came back two years later...

...only to realise you were supposed to switch back to normal visor at that point and it appears clear as day.

Many lols were had by my friends that day.

While Chaos from Final Fantasy (the original) was pretty tough, nothing made me rage-quit more than re-fighting Litch in the final dungeon. Sometimes, I felt like once I got past him, I had already won the game.

And the Spiral Corridor boss in Catherine has forced me to put down the controller and walk away from that game. I've not come back to it since. Timed puzzle + wonky controls + skewed persepctive = massive frustration.

Galamoth in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.

While going in against him prepared (with the circlet that lets you gain life from lightning damage and a Crissaegram) he can be laughably easy, the first time I fought him I had neither of those things, which made him damn-near impossible and one of the longest non-turn-based fighting fights that I've had.
Beating him with a properly equipped Alucard? Easy.
Beating him with an improperly equipped Alucard? Normal. Spam Soul Steal, and mist through most attacks. If you have the shield rod and any attack shield, that works too. In fact, Alucard Shield might be faster than Crissaegrim.
Beating him with Maria? Hard. Unless you can constantly drop Holy Judgment, he will kill you crazy fast.
Beating him with Richter? FUCK THAT SHIT. You have to glitch, or he kills you. Period.
Beating him with AxeArmor? ...ARE YOU INSANE?
:p Yeah, my first time playing, it took me a few deaths to realize that when he does his thunder storm attack, you can mist between his legs and start attacking his calf muscles. Once you learn this it becomes pretty easy to avoid his attacks, it's just a matter of slowly widdling down his life...which took forever.

:3 I'm proud to say, though, that I have beaten him as Richter without glitching. Just requires a LOT of flying uppercuts. Pretty sure that beating him with Aze Armor equipped the entire fight is impossible though, unless you have said circlet that abosrbs lightning damage also equipped. That thunder storm attack will utterly destroy you otherwise.

That anyone's actually made it to Galamoth with Richter is mind-boggling to me. I love SotN, but I can't get anywhere with anyone but Alucard.
