I just downloaded I Wanna Be the Guy. Holy crap is that game hard, but I just want to play it again and again. I laughed out loud the first time my guy exploded.

Hardest games.. well.. Ninja Gaiden series on the NES was always challenging, the first one not so much but I can't remember which of the 2 sequels but it had a waterfall stage that I could never beat.. ridiculously hard, and I tried it again maybe a year ago.
But that's not the hardest.. hard to figure out which would be THE hardest..
Contra? Battletoads? R-type? Ikaruga? DMC3 (which is refreshingly difficult for a newer game)? Any Touhou (I don't have the privilige of playing any of the Cave bullet hell arcade games that are pretty much Japan exclusive)?
All tough games. But not the toughest..
Side note any of you ever play the game The Immortal on the NES? The title lies you're certainly not immortal ("Read the inscription on the back of the medallion?" [Yes] No "You read the inscription and a blinding light burns you into a pile of ash. Game Over.").. I remember it being quite tough.
But the toughest.. I'd have to say would be "I WANNA BE THE GUY"
Since when are tetris blocks an instant death?

The first one that springs to mind is the Bloody Tower on DMC4. Yea the first 20 or so levels weren't bad but to get much further than that you had to have your concentration focussed like a laser and the reactions of a caffeine addicted meerkat.
The original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on NES. Good lord was that game difficult. The first few levels were doable, but I think at about level 4 it got almost impossible.
