What is the hardest game you've ever played?

end of story, the HARDEST GAME EVER.
When on the first screen you get killed around 30 times, you know the game is gonna be hard.(I was new, and I had just downloaded it on a whim.)

I think some people are confusing poor game design with difficulty.

As for my choice, it goes to Battletoads. Hard, but beatable.

Ninja Gaiden 2 (Xbox 360) I didn't bother with Alcolyte. Warrior was reasonably hard with some sticky spots, but Mentor was like a kick in the face when no one said the fight started yet. Everyone who's played has to admit it's unfair to a degree (Incendiary ninjas). After maybe 50 (possibly more) continues, I still can't finish the first Test of Valor (I refuse to surrender). The normal fights are an unfair kick to the face, while the ToV is like having to fight an mob armed with guns while you have one arm and a sword (shuriken stun doesn't work)

You're being completely serious? I've beaten NGB on Master Ninja, doing all the Hundred Fiend Challenges (getting stuck on a few, but eventually finding a trick for all of them) The incendiary ninja spammage in the first ToV isn't even funny, and the clawed ones have no qualms using suicide tactics when they haven't lost a limb yet. It's going to seem so easy after I finally beat it...

Yep it took us a bit to figure that out because we were all like WTF? Then when we figured it out it really killed the game for us when we realized the Developers hated us so much. That game almost got video games completely banned from our house because it got me and my brother actually punching each other and swearing like Sailors.

The Original Dragon Warrior for NES. I got it free with a subscription to Nintendo Power. I never made it to the final dungeon with the Dragon Lord and I still wake up in the middle of the night 17 years later, disgusted with myself for never beating it.

Many games, most of them have been mentioned already.
One of mine is Trigger Heart Exelica(sp) on XBL, was a remake (I think) for the one on the Dreamcast.
It was hard not to die, and even harder on the harder difficulties!
Was still fun trying to dodge all the screen filling bullets that give you no space to breathe.
